I am still using this camera and I'm enjoying it very much. It has become my most used SLR, my other two Nikons are the F5 and the FM2, the former is too big for causual shooting and requires so many batteries I must plan its use.

For the F5 (and also F6, F4s, F100, F90X, F80 with battery grip) I can highly recommend using the Panasonic Eneloop rechargeable batteries.
You will get about 35 to 60 rolls per charge, dependent on the usage (AF, VR, long time exposures).
I am using them for years in all my cameras in which AA cells can be used. And also in all of my compact flashes. Works excellently!

Best regards,
Henning

If you use the Eneloop in the F5 you won't get 35 rolls per charge. The camera would indicate a low battery condition way before the batteries ae exhausted.

No. I am using the Eneloops in my F5 and get that number of films. But I also mostly use the manual film rewind with the F5. Using that instead of the motor with the F5, F6, F4s saves a significant part of electric power.
But with the F6 I get generally more rolls per charge compared to the F5, though.

Best regards,
Henning

Same here.
I am absolutely satiesfied with the Eneloop performance. Have some which are more than 10 years old, have got countless charges, and are still going absolutely strong.

I am still using this camera and I'm enjoying it very much. It has become my most used SLR, my other two Nikons are the F5 and the FM2, the former is too big for causual shooting and requires so many batteries I must plan its use. The latter is great but heavier and slower than the F55. Two observations after using this camera for 2 years:

It occasionally gets confused with non-standard films from the likes of Adox and Cinestill that have unorthodox cassettes. It can refuse to acknowledge the reality of a film in the camera.

Secondly, the AF is not that good and under low light the camera has this 'AF-Assist' light that comes on. It works fine and the camera has always been accurate but, and a big but, that AF light ruins any hopes of a candid shot. You can, of course, switch off AF but the viewfinder does not make low-light focusing easy.

Edit - a third observation: I'm still on my first battery with this camera.

I had not seen this thread until you updated it. You know, I’m not all that interested in the camera, but I am far more interested than I would have expected in the social history of cameras, instanced by Mr and Mrs Smith of Llandudno as you described so brilliantly. Thanks for that, made me laugh out loud! 👍
