Good to hear about LF. Someday, I'll get one again. As soon as I find a place closing down and giving away their 4x5 enlarger with lenses and carriers.

Or just go the 8x10 route and contact print...

Most of my favorite portraits are with my 4x5. I'm looking forward to this summer and working with it in my new backyard.

A note on working in available light. I've pushed HP5 to 1600 in 4x5 and still barely had visible grain. Nothing like big pieces of film.

I'm looking forward to the results once you get comfortable with your big camera.

Cheers,
Ian

:D We have another one :D
Congrats Cheryl, I'm very confident that in time you'll be producing stunning photos with your new toy. Can't wait to see some new photos.

I was out photographing on Sunday last in sub 20 degree F. weather, freezing my a$$ off with the 4x5 and making so many mistakes I ruined 3 out of 4 sheets of film (mistakes like cocking the shutter with my glove on which was thick enough that I inadvertantly also opened the diaphragm all the way because the gloves touched both levers simultaneously). In desperation, I got back in the car and loaded the P67 just so I could make some images without the hassle....but therein lies the rub.....MOST of the time...I love the hassle!! LF rules....or at least governs benignly.

I guess I really shouldn't complain about all the rain we have been having; I'm sure not ready to trade with you.

Just finished processing and test printing my first 4x5 portraits. Why didn't you guys tell me about this large format thing sooner?

HAH!! Another CONVERT! Blessed is Large Format, for it shall endure forever. Beware Cheryl - I used 4x5 for a year then got the 8x10 - its a lovely path to follow. You think you can see things with the 4x5 - just wait until you peer through that 8x10 or larger GG.

I can see it now Cheryl. A Gowland TLR and an 11x14 Deardorff gracing your studio. "Mommy, we want the lady with the BIG cameras to take our pictures!"

Frankly, we were scared of creating a monster! Now that you've found out about LF, welcome aboard.

Be gentle with us please.

Thats the biggest problem these days.. Not a lot of photographers have had an opportunity to experience a large format slide or negative first-hand to really appreciate it's quality. Hell, most people have never even seen a fine print made from a large format negative.

I've seen many digitalphiles humbled by the presence of the beauty and quality of a 4x5 or an 8x10 contact print. It goes something like this, "holy mother of cinnamon biscuits!"

Educate!

Heh heh. Yah, I can feel the disease taking effect already.

No, wait. I'm drinking. Must be that. My mistake.

I'm taking the big-a$$ cam with me to my shoot tomorrow. I may or may not use it, depending on how the session goes. I'm photographing a boy with severe hemophilia. Because of the precautions I have to take with him, I can't do lots of the usual clowning, goofing-off stuff I often do to break the ice. I think in this case that the huge old cam might be a helpful tool to get him talking and into what we're doing.

Sounds like a great idea. Even though I am 25 it would work with me

If my big old cam can get free rides from carnies, this kid should be a push over.
