I would be glad to introduce myself. My name is Ivan Jose and I was born in Mexico City in 1987, I am a filmmaker and I have been seriously interested in photography since maybe 2002. I went to film school from 2005 to 2008 in order to became a film director, but for practical reasons I choose the path of cinematography, but I just could make a few low-budged short films in 16mm and 35mm. By 2009 I started a degree on philosophy in order to think better for make better films but after a few years I became very distant from the film industry in my country so I been very low profile till today.
I just don't love digital photography, for an unexplainable reason I don't find any emotional reward on digital photography. In my early days as photographer I was so in love with color and slide film but after maybe 2012 the film developing services in my country became very disappointing, so I quit color and start to make only black and white photography and developing by my self. I started to build my own dark room and it has been a little difficult because it is very difficult to find hi quality photography equipment in my country so I had to hunt for bargains and death stock from the analogue era. I still could get a wonderful Japanese enlarger in new condition (LPL 7700) and thanks to internet I could get a few wonderful lenses from B&H and Ebay (EL-Nikkor 63mm f/2.8 N, EL-Nikkor 50mm f/2.8 N, EL-Nikkor 75mm f/4 N, Apo-Rodagon N 80mm f/4, Apo-Rodagon N 50mm f/2.8 ).
At this time I use mostly 35mm and sometimes medium format. The film that I can get in optimal conditions is Ilford and I develop with D-76 and sometimes with Rodinal (I would love to try Xtol but for me has been impossible to get that powder and I think that I am going to cry when the bottle of Rodinal gets empty by two reasons 1) because Agfa don't produce it anymore, and 2) because I just can not import developers like Adonal or R09 from Europe or B&H because there is a kind of shipping restriction).
My objective is make a very hi quality prints but I am still working on it, and after several years of been a kind of lone wolf now I am very happy to be part of this International community with a lot of people with so much knowledge.

Welcome! The LPL7700 was my first enlarger, only a few years ago. I upgraded to 4x5, but will have to vacate my darkroom soon and haven't found another place yet...

Is it a problem to import powdered developers from the US? I'm sure our US based members can help you find a place with Xtol or D76 in stock and hopefully willing to ship to Mexico

Welcome to Photrio! My favourite films are many, but mostly use HP5 for conventional, up to 8x10. I also love using 14x17 xray film. Developers range from Pyrocat-HD, to Xtol (replenished). I also mix up a few from scratch, such as D-23, POTA, Caffenol, to name a few. So, that is something you may consider. Mixing up your own. D-23 contains only two ingredients, and is quite lovely.

Concerning Rodinal and Xtol, there are formulas around for a DIY approach.
 
Welcome!! D-76 is a great developer, Ilford makes great films. I am not sure about importing chemicals. Formulas are available for classic Kodak, Agfa, Ilford and more. Make your own.I like Rodinal too 😊

Is it a problem to import powdered developers from the US? I'm sure our US based members can help you find a place with Xtol or D76 in stock and hopefully willing to ship to Mexico

Few years ago I tried to obtain Xtol from Freestyle, but the people at the customs office just held it and told me that they would not release that package because it could contain drugs or something hazardous. I think that the only way to bring Xtol to Mexico would be if someone cross the border by car.
... At least D76 is almost always available in Mexico.
 
B & H have a separate customer service line for customers in Mexico, and X-Tol is CUSMA qualified, so you may find that the customs concerns can be dealt with.

I was also considering the option of making my own Rodinal with paracetamol but I don't know if the results will be as reliable as with the commercial formulas, the main reason for my attachment to Rodinal is because in the last years I been very inconstant with my photographic habits, then I do a lot of semi-stand developing mixing all my no so well preserved exposed films in the same tanks and the results are very acceptable. But I don't know if a home made Rodinal will keeps strength for developing after 90 minutes. However, mixing from scratch is a very interesting possibility. What should be expected from D-23?

I think that it does not help in a straight manner, but In a strange manner It helps a lot. I think that the most appealing films always have a very philosophical background, then if the filmmaker is unfamiliar with the philosophical approach to the problem the film suddenly loses its full potential.

A very capable camera for documentaries! Im not a very online person so I don't have personal work online but you can watch this documentary short film in which I collaborated a few years ago. By the way it was made with a GH4.

I don't trust so much in my capabilities as chemist but I cannot deny that the idea of homemade Rordinal seems very appealing to me.

I use D-23 to tame the contrast of Ilford Pan F, and XRAY films. D-23 allows me to open up shadows more, without losing highlight detail.
I do semi-stand development from time to time when it is warranted. Full on stand is risky, though. The best developer for stand/semi-stand, in my opinion, is Pyrocat-HD. Years ago, I did side by side tests with a few developers, including Rodinal, and Pyrocat-HD stood out by miles. There is almost no difference between semi and full on stand, if your goal is edge sharpness.

I have been wondering about the availability of film and chemicals in Central America (for home development), which I suspect is less than Mexico (maybe Costa Rica or even Belize has some activity). I wonder if I were to have an extended stay in Guatemala, what, if anything would be available. My guess was (and is supported by your experience) that if anything is available, D-76 would be likely. Can you get HC110 in Mexico (I suspect based on toxicity and your comments, maybe not)?

I have only used film a couple of times there (Guatemala, as well as Mexico recently), and just brought it back to process. I claim (without proof) that I am the first person to shoot ADOX CHS 100 II in Guatemala, and I would not be really surprised if that were the case! Reasonably likely it is not the case, but I cannot find any other photos on Flickr in Guatemala shot on CHS 100 II (or CHS 100). I do know one professional photographer in Guatemala, and of course he switched to digital. I need to have a conversation with him next time I go down about what film photography activity, if any, is still occurring.
 
I would vouch for Rodinal on most MF/LF films. On 35mm I would stay with medium speed films (ASA 100). That said, I've used Rodinal with Rollei RPX400 1:50 with good results

Agree with low availability on Mexico. On my local store, I can barely find Arista and Kodak Pro Image and thats about it. D-76 seems plentyful though.

Q si! Aprendi a hablar en prepa, y tambien vivi en Espanya por 2 veranos cuando era joven. Hace unos anyos empece a viajar a Mexico y me enamore del pais (perdoname por mi ortografia mala/extranya - es q no se como poner los acentos y los caracteres especiales en una maquina Windows). He ido 6 veces a CDMX desde 2016. Creo q voy a retirarme alla.

Bienvenido a' Photrio! 16mm and 35mm independent filmmaking is soooo coool! It's the essence fine cinema in my view. So many great films were made that way, on a budget, with a great story, backed by technical mastery of the craft.
