Hypo-clear (wash-aid) after selenium toning a DRIED/FIXED fiber print

Hi -

I know there are lots of (contentious and entertaining!) threads about the toning process, but I couldn't find an answer to this specific question:

If I have a printed/hypo-cleared/washed fiber print that has fully dried, and I want to selenium tone it in a separate session, is there any reason to do the hypo-clear before washing after the toning? There's no fixer involved in the 2nd session, so I assume the answer is no, but wanted to be sure.

Technically hypo clear is never required. It increases washing efficiency.

Selenium toners have fixer in them, so you might be able to wash faster by using hypo clear again. This would have to be determined empirically since there are variables involved, but in any case using hypo clear can’t hurt.

I always use hypo clear (a sodium sulphite bath) after selenium toning because, as Michael said, the toner contains fixer.

A correction of the name of the topic: Hypo is fixer. Sodium hyposulphite is an older name for Sodium thiosulphate.

As said above there is Thiosulphate in Selenium toners so hypo clear after a brief rinse and before final washing is still a good practice. I often Selenium tone after drying makes no difference when it's done.
