Traveling to Hyannis this weekend with some friends. Will likely bring the large format kit for a morning shoot. Any tips on particularly picturesque places in the not-too-far away area? Many thanks.

Maybe Drew B. will chime in. He lives next door in Barnstable. Send him a PM, he doesn't check in as often as he used to.

I always enjoy Sandy Neck in Sandwich - not too far away, as is Bass Hole, both on the Bay rather than Vineyard Sound. The (photographic) problem with Hyannis is that it serves as the hub of lots of activity, both tourist oriented and local commerce, given that it's the town with the train, the hospital, the ferries, etc. If you're into American kitsch, it might be a great place; I tend to head out to the beaches and preserves. Have a great time nonetheless. Cape Cod is crowded, frantic, hot (away from the beaches) and a bit crazy in the summer, but beautiful in spite of it all.

In my opinion, there's nothing appealing in or near Hyannis. That town is the epitome of 'tourist trap'.

Now, there are a number of places that are within a 90 minute drive that are quite different.

There is a beautiful white church in Barnstable. Dexter's Grist Mill in Sandwich. A number of places along Rt. 6a. {A little secret - if you have a GPS, look for 41.707436,-70.262204.} Downtown Chatham itself is quite quaint, Chatham light is nice but Nauset Light is better. Wynchmere Harbor in Harwichport is beautiful from the little park right on Rt. 28; if you are more adventuresome, take the first right (traveling northbound on 28) past the park and find the town pier. The little shack that serves as the town shellfish lab is a great subject. The old Marconi Site in North Chatham is interesting as are both the Town Pier and the Fish Pier. Rock Harbor in Orleans is a great sunset location, and you may be able to find some interesting still life opportunities wandering around the pier. Wellfleet is a neat little town - look for the footbridge across to the island. The Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary has wonderful hiking trails - the trail out to the salt marsh next to the bay is a great place for photography. Provincetown has a number of interesting opportunities - when we were there in April, the town hall was still under restoration, but if you can get inside, there are some breathtaking interior opportunities. Herring Cove Light at dawn would be nice
