How would I shutter this thing?

How would I shutter this thing? Or rather, how would you do it? It's a 15 inch barrel lens. I've seen contraptions that sit in front of the lens, but none of them seem to trigger a strobe -- my main requirement. For that reason, shutter speed isn't that important. Any ideas?

Very unlikely you will find one, but some of the Luc shutters incorporated flash contacts - I have one big enough for this lens.

Basically just cap the lens, pull the slide, have your strobe trigger in hand, un cap, fire, recap, dark slide.

Thanks everyone. Trying to find any of these with a flash sync is the challenge.

The issue with open flash is that I'm wanting to work with relatively fast film (640). It will require the extra step of killing the modeling lights before exposure. And I don't want to add steps if I can help it.

Yes and no.

What you can do is mount the lens onto the front standard. Then add a third standard between the front and rear standard. Mount he Sinar shutter to this standard. You will then need two bellows.

To get a third standard and extra bellows, a lot of people buy a cheap Sinar F camera and then rob the front standard and bellows off of it. If you like you can then part out the rest of the camera for sale.

You can add your own flash sync to a Packard. Just get a micro switch with a long actuating arm, glue it (I use 2 part epoxy) to the Packard on the same side as the cylinder, position it so that the cylinder/arm contact actuates the switch at the position of full open. Works like a charm.

Actually, I glue the switch to a piece of thermoplastic and attach the plastic using existing screw holes on the Packard. Easily reversible if you decide you don't want it there. Best to get a couple of Packards, one with and one without the flash sync.

How about a guillotine shutter?

An alternative would be to use slow film and just use your lens cap as a shutter.

The early Packards used two pieces of flexible metal(copper?) as flash contacts.
As Mr maniac suggests the guillotine AKA drop shutter works. You can even make the thing with different speeds by changing the size of the moving opening.
