My first digital camera, a Panasonic FZ-10, was taken in a car break-in, along with my new LL Bean parka. Insurance covered the loss.
In my youth, I heard stories of NYC tourists being targeted in the 1960s by junkies who would use a razor to slice through camera straps and run off, usually with a Leica or Nikon. Somebody even marketed all-metal camera straps to thwart them.

"Way back when, in a foreign land, my housekeeper let a couple of guys into the house who stole my Nikon F and a Rolleiflex belonging to my employer. A very difficult conversation with my boss’s boss and his boss ensued."
30 years ago I had a small chimney cleaning business. I hired a young man to help me. He spoke Spanish, but not much English.
We were at a nice home cleaning the fireplace and chimney. Later that day I received a call from that customer saying he was going to call the police
and press charges against me for theft. A camera that had been on the mantle was missing. I said that I had not taken it, but he insisted. It dawned on me that
possibly my hired hand had taken it, but when I questioned him he denied it and claimed to know nothing about it. I persuaded the customer to give me a day to work it out and he
agreed. So I went across the street and had a chat with a friend/mentor about the situation and he told me to bring the young man over and he would talk to him since he was more fluent in
Spanish than I. During a calm but firm talk with the young man, he admitted that he had taken it and he was very sorry. He returned it to me and I, in turn, returned it to the customer. My customer was glad to have the camera back and did not press charges. I didn't hire the young man again. I think the camera was a black Nikon FM2 with a 50mm lens.
