How to know if film is advancing?

When checking a newly purchased used camera I keep a very old film to test with. I feed the film into take up reel, leave the back open to watch what is happening. I do that a couple of times, if all is well load her up and take her out.

On all slr's when you open the camera back the counter resets to 0,

And it is a great way to fog the film.

Same here. I have my camera testing roll clearly labeled so not to accidentally confuse it with fresh film.

I think I can remember that long ago, as I havn't used a SLR for around 15 years, either MF or 35mm, I like my folders/rangefinders
