Is there a good recipe for Caffenol that would deliver good results on Tri-X?

<the price of b&w developing is killing me!>

Also, a fixer?

Hi,

I don't know anything about Caffenol, but in response to your comment about the price of b/w film, I'd suggest getting Arista Premium 400. It is none other than Tri-X in a burgundy box instead of a yellow one, and it is about half the price of Tri-X. The problem is that it is only available in 35mm.

Hello,

I haven't used caffenol myself, but if you're looking for a cheap developer, could I suggest HC-110? I spend about 18 cents per roll using it on my Tri-X (I use dilution 'E', 6mls per roll, bottle contains 16oz syrup).

@2F/2F: I meant *developing*.

And anyway, I *might* use the 400TMAX caffenol mix (http://www.caffenol.org/2010/03/12/the-delta-recipe/), which is the Ilford Delta mix, with 2x the Vitamin C.

Does caffenol need a stop bath?

Water stop is fine, but in my experience you have to rinse quite thoroughly---several changes of water---or your fixer smells funny and gets a little stain from the coffee, making it look like it's gone bad.

I think Donald Qualls tested his original Caffenol recipe with Tri-X and got reasonable results. I'd try bog-standard Caffenol C first. (But as others have noted there are plenty of more conventional cheap developers, too.)

hi ricardo12458

there are other developers that are much cheaper than caffenol and caffenol c.
if you know one of the caffenol blogs, another is http://caffenol.blogspot.com/
the person who runs it, reinhold, has one of the best resources for all things caffenol.
i could give you my recipes for caffenol c, but reinhold's website has variations
that work great.

as for fixer ... there is no substitute for hypo of speed fixer ...

good luck !

Use HC-110 and drink the coffee.

PC-TEA is also economical and lasts forever, but you'd have to mix it on your own. Just three ingredients.
