I have a couple of oddball lenses that won't take lenses on the front (ie 500mm Takumar), so behind the lens is the only way to go. How do you put a gel filter in there so it doesn't fall into the camera or into the lens? And also doesn't get fingerprints all over it.

Double stick tape. Scotch 3/4" ATG adhesive transfer tape is one. Check "netting cinema lenses" by Mako Koiwai on Vimeo, the same technique should apply. I had to use this technique on big cinema zooms when I didn't have 6" ND filters. Works like a charm, and Freestyle has most common gel filters in stock from Lee.

OK, so tape it to the back of the lens, then mount the lens. This could be a challenge for the 500mm as there is very little to tape it to. I will see. Thanks for the suggestion.

I think it takes 49mm filters on the back of the lens. That is probably the most common size to find.

yeah, I heard that too. they don't fit, at least on mine. Also that would mess up infinity focus as far as I can tell.

One of the advantages of the gel filter at the back of the lens is the negligible affect on focus.

One option, requiring a very clean filter, is to cut the filter to size and tape it across the film gate. That's a convenient method particularly if you want to shoot IR film in an SLR with a strong IR filter (but don't forget to refocus). Not convenient for changing filters mid-roll, however.

LOL yes good idea. Would be a good option with a yellow filter for instance.

As a redneck I say strategic use of duct tape and bailing wire
