So that your other hand is free to adjust the focus.

Makes sense.

(I am so much accustomed to left-hand focusing, that I was slow on the uptake.)

Another interesting design was the Nikkormat with the shutter speed dial ring near the lens mount.

But I've had the film advance lever not advance all the way to the next frame, on my Exacta VX.
