Hello-
I was just wondering how many people use a hand held meter seprate from the camera. I usually use one. I have a Sekonic L-208. It is only a little meter but it does the job!

Good Evening,

Many of my cameras either don't have meters or batteries for their meters are not easily available, so I very commonly use a handheld meter, except in full, clear sunlight when experience works just about as well.

Likewise, I have many cameras with no meter, so I use a handheld or guestimate. Sometimes I will use one camera to meter for another.

Handheld meter for studio flash exposures. Spotmeter function when I'm really trying to do it right!

I use a handheld meter quite often. I have both the Minolta flashmeter III and flashmeter VI. I use only 35mm and the meter in 35mm camera is generally the most versatile on of all the buit in meter but yet the hand held meter is still needed. Incident and flash metering are not available in builtin meter. Although many have spot meter the hand held is still better.

Minolta Flashmeter III and Gossen Digisix. Only two of my cameras have built in meters, and one other one has a metering prism that I use sometimes. The rest have no meter.

i said i use it all the time, but
i am mistaken
i only use it in certain situations ..
mainly with a LF camera ..
or if i am being hired to do something.

any other situation i will sunny16 or just wing it.
i sometimes use a meter to check myself, and i am usually pretty close.

I mostly use a Sekonic L-558R or an older Minolta Auto Meter IIIF when I need to go a little lighter and compact.

Out of the twenty cameras I own, only two have meters in them. They are both 35mm. When I'm just screwing around, I use the meters, but they don't provide the quality of information I get from my spot meter. To me, the in-camera metering has sort of a Cliff's Notes effect.

I said "usually", but "frequently" would be a better choice.

I have a number of cameras that do not have built in meters or metering prisms. I also have a number of cameras (Olympus OM) that have excellent built in meters. In addition, I have a metering prism that I can use on two of my camera bodies (Mamiya 645). Finally, I have 4 usable hand meters (although two of them tend to be reserved for backup use). The two I use regularly are both Gossen meters - a Profisix, and a Digiflash.

I also agree with john - sunny 16 or just wing it are both available options.

When I do use a hand held meter, I tend to use it in incident mode. That may say something about my approach to the question.

I also like using flash meters, when circumstances permit.

I guess I am all over the place on this.

Matt

P.S. I noted from another post that the OP is a teenager. That means all of my cameras, and all but one of my hand meters are older than he/she is

I use the meter so much the model numbers are worn off. It is a Sekonic incident and reflective spot meter. I think the model # is 508.

Most all the time I use the hand held meter. In some situations I'll use the camera meter then as I think appropriate make adjustments.

I use the Gossen SBC and F, but would prefer a spot for everything but studio/strobe. I have 6 cameras here in Van 3 are w/o in camera meters (2 are LF and the other requires out of production bats to run the meter) and of the 4 I left in Detroit all are w/o meters.

I use a Gossen Luna Pro F with the "spot" attachment. I know it is not a true spot, but it's close enough for me. I even use it with my Nikons, esp. the F2 that has a meter that's not completely reliable.
