How many 100' bulk rolls have you used?

No idea. I've been bulk loading for four decades. Saves about half over prepackaged film and I always have it available. One roll in the loader and one on the shelf. I prefer the Lloyds loader to the Watson.

I just thought my "time" was more valuable shooting and printing in the darkroom than bulk loading film.

Your time must be really valuable. It takes 30 seconds to load a roll of film.

Actually it is!
I can buy 19 rolls of Tri-x for about $95 from B&H (36exp), a 100' roll of Tri-x is $129, a short date roll is available for $95! If I go for Ilford HP5 it is $59 for a 100' roll. Plus $1.25-$2 for a cassette (they need to be replaced often to avoid scratches). Plus you need a bulk loader, a one time purchase though. There is little or no reason for me to bulk load film.

Rather a lot of bulk rolled 135 film, wheelbarrows of the stuff in fact.

I purchased my current style of bulk film loader in Germany in 1982, a Kaiser, since then I have about 6 of them. In current use my four most used are here on my enlarger table. Essentially they are the same unit, just with different branding on the outside. I have used cartons of the plastic screw type of cassette for yonks. Currently using the remnants of a 50 box carton. I usually use them for about 30 rolls of film each then discard, although I have been known to use some for lots and lots of rolls.

The other pictures are of some of the used cartons, some of the used tins (gave away about 100 of them a couple of years ago, plus, for years they were used by the smoker in the house as ashtrays with the changeover being about one new one every couple of months). In the refrigerator there are about 13 x 30m bulk films ready for whenever.

I recently learned photography (about 2 years back), because my roommate bought lot of film rolls(36exp 35mm black and white Trix and ilford, several hundred feet rolls) for his father who came to visit him from Pakistan and they shot very less in film camera than expected as his father got interested in his canon mark DSLR. Finally he taught me how to photograph, bulk load and develope black and white. He used most of the films after his father left to Pakistan, I rolled around 300 -350 rolls from bulk loader for him and developed atleast 100 for him as I got interested in developing process. He gave me his camera, bulk loader and other gadgets before he left to Pakistan, I learnt by wasting approx 14 films. Later I bought F5 from Apug user, then bought almost 41 rolls and shot every thing in a month, developed myself. Much to my surprise, most of the pics came out very good than our expectations.


Now I am planning to buy expired films(100 feet non c41 films like black and white, I don't know c41 process) from Apug users and planning to try my luck in upcoming summer on landscape and portrait. So far I haven't bought any, I posted ad in WTB classifieds in Apug. If any of you planning to sell your excessive 100 feet rolls for low price, if price is affordable; I will purchase from you.

I haven't used bulk loaded film in decades. I've started to think about using it again because I found a bulk loader at a garage sale with Tech Pan in it. On top of that, I also got a Shirley Welford film cartridge with that sale too.

Umm, nope.

I purchase film in bulk when the price to purchase is good for my currency. I then use the film as and when needed, which generally takes years.

I guess prices vary in different locations but for me, using Ilford, Foma and Kentmere branded films bulk rolls work out about 50% the cost of packaged cassettes. I don't shoot hundreds of cassettes a year but it still saves me money.

Kodak is another matter. Their bulk Tri-X price is simply not sane.

As for replacing the cassettes....never had the need to....my old, used plastic cassettes work just fine. A quick clean every two or three uses and they're good. Nonesense that one has to buy new ones regularly.

Check out the fresh bulk rolls of Ultrafine Xtreme available for about $34 for 100 feet. You'll probably find this to be cheaper than expired bulk film.
It is also a good quality film, widely rumored to be manufactured by Harman (maker of Ilford and Kentmere films).

Zero here also. I was gifted a Watson 100 with a partial roll of Tri X Pan in it, which I promptly ruined by opening the loader. (I didn't know there was film inside). I've been eyeing the HP5+ bulk rolls but haven't purchased one yet.

Never understood the long leader comments regarding the Watson loaders..... you certainly have no problem joining the film at the gate and then using the changing bag or darkroom to put the canister into the loading position shut the cover load up and cut the film near the gate (the last part all done in the light) ready for next time....No wasted end shots even on a XA.

Back when the earth was flat, I went through 100ft rolls by the case. I employed 4 or 5 photographers full time, plus me. And a film crew.

Most often we souped 36 rolls of Ektachrome a day, sometimes 2 runs of 36.

Plus black & white 35mm, 120 and 4 X 5.

Sent 16mm to Dallas.

I used to shoot 100' of Ektachrome every time I went to Europe for three to four weeks. When the photofinishers stopped returning the cassettes it was no longer financially feasible.

the main advantage is not all that packaging, so i save some waste from the landfill
and i can make shorter rolls if i wan. i have been thinking of getting a lomo-kino
or a eyemo, so i can make movies ( read use u p the film fast )

I've been through about 5. Or at least loaded them up. A roll of Vision3 500T, Some Fuji Eterna 250D, Tmax-400, Tmax-100, Ultrafine Xtreem 400, HP5+. All expired except for the Ultrafine.

I go to the shop and ask for their empties and reload into them. I use a Watson and have another as backup but it's full of mid 70's Tri-x. The Watson tails are annoying a bit, I didn't account for them when I first loaded up and now have a bunch of 24 shot rolls of Tmax-100 that only really have about 20 shots on them. Live and learn.

I used the Kodak snap cap cassettes. In recent years I switched to TMAX and Ilford films and added more loaders both Lloyd and Watson (still not liking the Watson). While I got into color printing I never ventured into color bulk films because I didn't have lab that would return my cassettes.
But my favorite format has always been 6x6.
But these are just fond memories now, digital has killed all the fun, but at the present cost $129 for 100' of my favorite film i won't be buying 35mm film any time soon. 120, maybe.

Ultrafine Extreme is a pretty good replacement for Tri-x. Pretty cheap too.
