It's great, as long as you don't need to put it on an AI camera that doesn't have the tab that can flip out of the way.

I agree, they don't get a whole lot better.
Maybe better coatings but that is subjective to the look you like.
A newer one may be a bit more resistant to flare but not a lot sharper.

Exactly! I prefer the older single coated Nikkors for portraits. They just don't get any better!

As you can see from the picture below, other then the seemingly odd aperture blade geometry and resulting bokeh, I can't say I can find fault with it optically compared to any of these other f1.4. They are all quite good and certainly well made.
