How do you deal with GAS?

It is not a bad thing. I just picked up a 6x9 folder for the equivalent of 50 Euro. Yes!
(And then I had it fixed for the equivalent of 100 Euro. But still!)

Good point there about avoiding temptation. Despite my resolve to cut down on material possessions, avoiding temptation helps...

Since GAS is always there around the corner, I keep on looking at options, consider pros and cons, etc...

But I discovered the best way may be to make sure I can't succumb, simply by buying darkroom supplies and/or film each time the amount of money I could used for buying gear is too high... Therefore I usually can't afford additional equipment, and have supplies to use the equipment I own.

Seems to be working at the moment !

In the case of true G.A.S. (item wanted, but not needed), I put the item in question on a wishlist with a name that reminds me that I can't get it. The latest of these is my "Nikon Insanity" wishlist on B&H (a very nice... $14,000... F6 kit which I will NEVER buy).

On the other hand I do have other wishlists of specific things I actually need to buy, such as a long lens for the RB.

I take a good look at the current state of the economy and try very hard not to take my current situation (employed) for granted. The $$ spent on a piece of equipment is better saved just in case... IMHO.

I have an easy 2 step solution for this connundrum.

1. Look in wallet.

2. If gas symptoms reappear, refer back to step 1.

Just the other day I almost ordered a lens but in the last minute remembered that I actually got one already (sitting in a cupboard not being used)

I think the biggest problem right now are the incredible low prices when studios and darkrooms are going digital.
Equipment that I could hardly afford to even dream about 20 years ago can be had for next to nothing, and that makes it terribly hard to resist.
Also the feeling that the current supply of top of the line stuff will some day run out doesn't help.

Usually I try not to buy, telling myself that I can get by on what I have, and then I buy.

I merely remind myself of what I do for a "living". Then I get depressed. This usually solves the problem. Checking my bank account helps too, if reminding myself of what I do fails to offer any responsibility.

One antacid for neutralizing gas:

1. Choose a nice camera you own—we will call this Camera X. Place this in the closet and put it out of your mind that you own it.

2. Set your homepage to the specific page on APUG that talks up how great Camera X is. Read and dream about Camera X! (The old school method is to obtain the actual brochure that describes Camera X in exhaustive detail. Carry this to read and refer to several times a day.)

3. When you can't stand it any longer, go to the closet and "buy" your Camera X. You will remember why you had to have it the first time.

Neither, actually. When I have GAS I grab a KEH catalog and sit back and enjoy it. Ahhhh...

Hmm, Cosina Voigtlander makes a 15mm ultra wide lens specifically for my Bessa R3a. That's pretty wide! You know, a guy could do a lot of really cool stuff if he had a lens like that. Jeez, the widest lens I've ever had was a 28mm Nikkor. And come to think of it, I remember one time I wished it were a little wider. 15mm...that would be perfect for interior architectural photography, and pretty cool for street shooting, too. And I'll bet it would add quite a bit of drama to landscapes. Imagine that, all these years and NOT having such a useful lens! It would bring a whole new perspective to my photography. Just the thing to "fill out" my kit. And you know, I might even just shoot EVERYTHING with it. It could be my one lens, and the critics would be floored. How did I overlook this? It all seems so sensible, pretty much a no-brainer, that I should have this. And it's really a bargain, especially for something I've been missing all these years....

Like most of the others have said A) I look in my bank account and think about how busted my car is and, B) I look and see how shitty my photos are with the two cameras I already have and wonder why the hell would I need another camera to make shitty photos with? GAS thwarted.
