I got my 12" Commerical Ektar on an Acme shutter back from a friend. Speeds are okay but I want to try shooting some strobes with it. How do I McGuyver a sync cable? I have an extra long coiled Vivitar 283 sync cord. Can I just take a sync cord and strip it? Do all sync cords have 2 wires?

Most sync cords do not use wire, but a flexable metalic ribbon. Very difficult to solder or do much else with it. With some light wire, wrap a loop around each sync post on the shutter (insulated is best), then insert one of the wires into the center of the PC fitting . still keeping the two wires seperated wrap the second wire around the silver ground portion (ground) of the PC cord. Gaffer tape the whole assembly to the cord so it does not pull the center wire out of the fitting. Not the prettiest hook up you will ever see, but It will work!

Until I was able to find a dual post cable (they come up on Ebay every now and then) I used an old electric razor cord -- I cut the electric plug off and attached a PC connection. Worked fine.

I did the same as dpingr (used a modified electric razor cord) - like he said, it works fine.

Neil.

And if you happen to use Norman or other flash units that use a household-type sync cord, you can use an electric razor cord unmodified.

Cool! I'll have to find a used electric razor from goodwill or something. How do I attach a flash to the razor?
I'll have to figure how what I need for the other end. One end, I need that bipost or 2 wires and on the other end, I guess it'll be either a household prong or go to a hotshoe with a sync connector. Thanks guys!

Could be the lack of sleep and mandatory overtime I've been working, but if you need a household prong, you'll already have one on the cord of the razor.

Exactly, an electric razor cord COULD double as a Bipost to Household sync cord. Most large pro flash units (separate power pack and head type) take household, as well as some take phone plug type plugs.

my point exactly, even in my admittedly sleep deprived state "I" can recognize that simple fact, just remember to not try plugging in your shutter...

Oops, I guess I should have put a smiley on that. I was just trying to be silly and picturing myself with a shaver on the other end of that cord and saying "shave!" instead of "cheese!"
