Martin, no problems with an itinerary as we shall be right in the midst of wonderful photographic opportunities  All very close to hand as well! I did ask a while back if those attending could give me an idea on what they would like to do but so far I haven't seen any replies so I will shortly be having another go at this and will sort something out. The weather of course will play a big part as well as the tides if we are to go onto some of the beaches - and I assume you will want to onto our beaches!

So I would suggest these places should be worth thinking about.

Botallack area - coastal / mine workings etc.
Cot Valley - beach - superb if tide is OK
Gwithian - beach - coastal - lighthouse - tides must be Ok
South Wheal Frances - inland old mine workings - very good.
Layon Quoit - striking stone burial chamber.
Newlyn harbour - just down the road from the hotel - fishing fleet etc
Penzance harbour - just up ther road from hotel - intertesting harbour
Old open air swimming pool on beach just up the road from hotel. Good opportunities when not open.

Loads more to suggest and do if required! All the above can be got to by car with a small amount of walking. Outdoor gear and sensible footware is of course needed. I reckon we could do about three loacations per day with say starting at 9am ish and finsishing at 6 pm ish. With having some flexibilty for tides / weather and lunch.

As mentioned above I will put an iteinery together nearer the date - but feedback would help unless you are happy to leave it to me. Keep watching this this space !

Mmmm!.....It looks to me that the itinerary is pretty much written Neil. And a fine one it looks too.

Thanks

Stoo

Neil, one thing that I did appreciate with the APUG visit in Kent, 2 years ago now? was the variety with landscapes, little seaside town, fishermen area and lighthouses opportunities.

Of course, I am expecting to go to some pretty amazing beaches in Cornwall. It would be nice to move in sync with the tides and the weather. I'd personally rather have a pack lunch if the weather is great, or seemingly, don't mind having a great table lunch if the weather is Anglesey like.
As we are a group, some people may feel differently... may be it would be useful to have tourist and adventurous hicker options available.

Also, if the weather was favorable, I was toying with the idea of some night photography (never done). Whilst talking about it, Stoo said that the 2 hours after sunset are the best.
It could help giving a sense of accomplishment for those who can't wake up in the morning.

My 2 cents for what they are worth,

Best

Delphine

Delphine, thanks will take all those items on board.

Penzance / Newlyn harbours would be good for night shots etc. Botallack, Gwithian and South Wheel Fraces will provide lesser or greater amounts of walking to suit everyone. I thought for lunch on the Saturday we could head for St just (as it is handy) and folks could buy sandwiches, pasties, fish and chips or use the pubs. Also there are loos and a big free car park  Lunch on Sunday could be just pasties from the master baker in Hale !
Of course anyone can strike off and do their own thing is that is what they want to do and I (or Bill) will be happy to advise and point you in the right direction. Also if anyone is coming down early and wants a meet up before Friiday night just let me know and we can sort something out for another location.

Neil.

Neil the itinerary you've put together already sounds good. I fancy a bash at Porth Nanven too.

As for night photography count me in. But then I would've had a go in any case. Personally I am happy to get up at the crack to get the light. Do I recollect correctly that Penzance beach has nice rocks and wave cut rock platforms? Or am I just dreaming again!

Mining wrecks, but especially coastal views is my thing - but then I guess you already knew that!

Regards to all - Mark

Thanks Stoo and Neil - didn't recognise the name Cot Valley. Should've, but as usual, brain stopped play!

Yep, Stoo has it - Porth Nanven and Cot Valley are the same thing

Neil.

Mark,

If they are there I have not seen them. TBH I can't get that excited about Penzance baech as there are so many better ones available to me living locally but that's not to say it wouldn't make some good photogrphy.

Neil.

Better beaches locally

Neil - I will happily take your advice and go where ever - if you say its not that great - then I will go where ever you recommend...

You do live there after all

Mark,

The beach (Penzance) is right outside the hotel so have a look when you get there and see what you can do. St Michael's Mount is the most photographed subject in that area and is often photographed from Penzance beach. It can be quite a stunning sight at sunrise and sunset.

Neil.

Why do I have the feeling that only two days will feel extremely frustrating  ?

I really can't wait

Now... time for a silly question.... the French have Mont St Michel. Why are both Monts called the same? who copied who? :D

Dee

You're right Delphine, it's a wonderful part of the world, but it will be a taster to wet your appetite and make you return again

Weren't all the St Mich(a)el's Mount's all once Norman :D There is a third one !

I've a strong feeling that there's another photographer shooting with 10x8 near St Just that weekend . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Ian

Re Monts or Mounts !

I have to admit the Cornish one does look a bit like the French version

Neil.

I've just been playing around with a website for the first time (finally found a package that I could make some sense of!)
The results are at the link below. My scanning settings and website design probably leave a lot to be desired (the prints I photographed with a d*****l camera came out better than the scans) but the reason for posting the link is primarily for the interest of those heading for Cornwall and in particular anyone with mining remains on their agenda.

Delphine made me curious. St Michaels Mount was given to Mont St. Michel (France) in 1075,after the Norman conquest. The French Abbot had the Church built by 1144. St Michael's Mount was taken back from the French in 1414 during Henry V's reign. So yes there is a strong French connection

Tony

Nice images and site Steve, I know Wheal Betsy well. I have been fortunate to spend two days with her already...

I look forward to visiting some more of the same, though I doubt my images will be to the same standard as yours.

Not forgetting the third one off the coast of Jersey of course whichhas even stronger Norman/French connections.

Steve, nice work. I lived in Camborne for a few months a few decades ago, and haven't been back to visit for 20+ years. Your photos bring back many fond memories, thanks. Time to get out the slide projector again for another look all those Kodachromes.

>Neil, I asked about the two people staying 3 nights for the price of 2 a couple of weeks ago

>Yes they are still advertising it but I had a similar experience to Mark - £70 per person per night - and they weren't too keen on it including >Dinner either - definately no 3 for 2 offers for that weekend (as the Hotel was suprsingly full that weekend!)

>I have not booked yet as I am still unsure if I will be able to make it - but it should be good for those that do

>Martin

Martin,
Sorry but I have only just spotted this. All I can think of is the hotel has got booked up quicker than expected and all the doubles offer rooms for that weekend have been all taken. I did stress the need to book as early as possible as getting anywhere in the area for the group, at this time of the year, was very difficult. I do hope you can make it.

I just contacted the hotel as I wanted to change my room to a double and they didn't have any record of my reservation. However, Lucinda was great and has managed to sort me out a double room for £70 per person per night with evening meal

Brian

That's a little worrying Brian

Were you given a booking reference number when you first booked?

Barry,

it was back in December when I booked over the phone and I can't remember if they gave a reference number or not. Needless to say I've got email confirmation now.

The hotel does seem to be pretty full and it appears that they've got another group of people staying at the hotel. Lucinda read out a list of people who have booked as part of the APUG group and I remember hearing both Delphine's and Mark's names. I would suggest if you've got a reference number you'd be OK.
