Hi, I recently made some small matte board masks to use as a negative carrier for 6x7 black and white negatives. However, when I put the film between them the negative definitely does not stay totally flat. I was considering using a piece of glass as the top layer, and then one of the matte boards underneath as a mask, in order to keep it flat. Since I'm using one piece of glass, and the negative wont be projected through it, can I use normal glass? Should I shell out for a piece of anti newton ring glass? I'm using a Beseler 23cii enlarger.

Dear Radical Eddward,

The top glass is the one that needs to have the AN surface because that is the smooth side of the film.

I purchased a 4x5 set from Focal Point and felt their prices were quite reasonable.

Good luck,

I used plain sheet glass and black taped mat boards without issue before I acquired all the right carriers. Glass on bottom, neg and mask on top. Worked fine for me for a couple years for 120 and 35.

Ive made carriers using regular glass. I put electrical tape as a negative guide above n bellow where teh neg would sit inside so it gave a bit of clearance n not squash the neg in the sandwich.

Use emery cloth to take the sharp edges off.
