My dad sent me his complete Contax IIIa kit for Christmas! Body, 50/1.5, 85/2, and 135/4 Sonnars, 28/3.3(?) Angulon, turret viewfinder, and a Kilfitt reflex viewer and 300/5.6 Tele-Kilar, wrapped up in a pair of nice leather carrying bags along with a copy of _The Contax Way_.

I don't know why I buy cameras; I should just be hanging around waiting to inherit them!

Just wanted to crow about my good fortune a bit. (And to ask about that weird Angulon; Google gives me no evidence that such a lens exists. It looks highly prewar and has weird f-stops: 3.3, 4.5, 6, 9, 12. What *is* this thing?)

That's one heck of a Christmas gift. You have an amazing Dad, and I think it's great that he realizes that you will get as much joy from his equipment as he must have had. One of the great things about the classic film cameras is that they can become family heirlooms. I doubt that anyone will be handing down the newest digi cam in 20 years. Ah, here we go; I was reading too fast, fooled by a Schneider lens cap. It's not an Angulon but a Berthiot *Angulor*. Apparently Berthiot lenses in Contax mount are quite rare, but I haven't been able to determine if they're any *good*...

It is, indeed, one heck of a Christmas gift. We have a lot of photography in the family---my dad managed a shop for a number of years as well as being a serious hobbyist and occasionally selling a shot or two, and his grandfather was an early pro and a very serious LF landscape shooter---and I seem to have become the point where all the old equipment converges. Well, darn!

Congrats, that is a great gift.

S.O.M. Berthiot lenses don't seem too common in the U.S., but they were a manufacturer of fine cine and large format lenses as well as 35mm lenses for Alpa and Exacta, I believe, and I suppose Contax as well. I have a 120mm/f:14 Berthiot Perigraphe ultrawide that covers 8x10", and it's a great little lens--
