Which episode of my esteemed, but grumpy colleagues television series is this? And more importantly, are they doing a macular biopsy with an aspiration needle poked right through the cornea to find it? Being an ophthalmologist, that always makes my day.

he was asked by the cia to help them "fix" someone i south america
who looked like they had been poisoned with a radioactive isotope ...
it was something not too pretty to look at -
turns out he at too many brazil nuts and od'd on selenium.

Paul;

Those are not photographic prints are they? If you consider them so, you are much farther gone than I thought. :D

No, but a lot of people think the stuff analog photographers use is highly toxic and their digital prints from ink are not, but inkjet printer ink is also toxic.

As for a photograph, the print is the photograph, I've seen some pretty good ink prints, that really should be considered photographs (alternative process???), although I don't think ANY digital process will ever beat a properly exposed and processed silver print from a properly exposed and processed B&W negative, especially if that negative is large format.

Most inkjet printer inks are actually quite toxic, does that count?

And, I do know that they are using Selenium to fight (or as a cure for) Lung Cancer......

hmmmmmm.....

Various metallic compounds are used in Chemotherapy. The two that spring to mind are cisplatin and transplatin. Both based on good old platinum, and both not exactly nice to ingest unless you don't have any other options left.

I've smelt selenium in the past when repairing old electrical equipment. The smell of a selenium rectifier leaking smoke is not forgotten quickly, nor forgiven either if you are married (!)

I heard that in a Yoda voice..... No the rumour that I was suddenly overcome by the toxicity of the ink, and was no longer here was greatly exaggerated, I have been away because the $%#@!&* phone company took over 5 days to repair my $%#@!&* dead $%#@!&* phone line, I am $%#@!&* *&^%$# off about it too.....

Actually the intent of the comment, was that people are always jawing off about how toxic photo chemicals are, and that they print with the environmentally friendly ink, most of them are shocked to learn that although water based, that ink is actually more toxic then the photographic chemicals. I don't know if anyone knows whether the ink is still toxic when dry, considering that getting a print wet often means the ink runs, are we poisoning ourselves handling inkjet prints with moist skin? We know that most of the toxicity is washed out of silver prints, and that the remainder is locked within the emulsion.

beryllium coats the inside of fluorescent bulbs too ...
and hopefully people know not to smash the bulbs
and breath deeply ...
just as people should realize that some photochemicals
like selenium, should be handled with caution,
or if silver nitrate is splashed into someone's eyes
they can go blind ... yes i know silver nitrates are in burn remedies ...
and small amounts can have medicinal value, just like trace amounts
of selenium is found in seafood, and nuts, and should be consumed ..

John, colloidal silver metal is in the burn remedies that I know of.

Mercury is also in fluorescent bulbs.

But my ink cartridges list nothing worse than "copper compounds", propylene glycol, glycerine.... etc. I think that they are dodging the issue on the cartridges.
