I bought a deeply discounted display model Canon AV-1 where I worked as my first 35mm camera. It didn't come with a strap so I bought a hippy strap for it. Hippy straps were very common in those days.

When I replaced my Canon with a brand new Contax 139 it came with a thinner strap that ergonomically fit my neck better than the hippy strap so I sold the Canon with hippy strap attached.

One thing about that hippy strap. It matched my acoustic guitar strap.

Bethe's Home for Wayward Cameras. Glad I could get a chuckle for that. I now have four of my dad's old cameras - the Pentax H1a I borrowed and never wanted to give back, the Konica, a Nikon N6006, and something that predates the Pentax. The only one I really want is the Pentax.

I have one I use on an old Benser case where the leather broke...and it doubles for holding my Silvertone U1 on the odd occasions I need to play standing up.

Yes, I use one. My K-1000 has the original I bought with it in 1978.

I wouldn't say I'm a big fan of them but I do have a couple of originals. One I have on my beater C3 (just seems right...). In general I prefer big springy Optech straps. Only thing I've found so far that can make an RB67 seem easy on my shoulder.

I hate those damn things! I've seen way too many camera bodies eaten away by those stupid huge metal clips. If/when I buy a camera with a stupid hippie strap (well-named, IMO), first thing I do is remove it from the camera, then I toss it in the trash, then I inspect the camera I took it off of for damage. And usually there is damage, unfortunately.

Back in the 60s and 70s, cheapo guitar straps were made from the same type of woven material. I'lll admit to having owned a couple of them, but they were inoffensive -- they didn't hurt my guitars.

I've idly wondered if these crappy camera straps could be converted to guitar straps. Probably could be. I still wouldn't use them -- I've got better guitar straps.

I have a few that I use. A pre-1980's classic camera just doesn't look right with a modern-looking synthetic material strap.

I got a bit nostalgic and picked up a Chinese made DSLR hippy strap on eBay for the princely sum of A$5. Plenty to chose from pattern and colour wise and they have much more "camera friendly" fasteners.

Good quality, nice fabric.

Below is the one I chose. Just have to work out if it goes on my AE-1 or not.

I still use 'em. There's a camera show once a month near me so they are easy to find and generally can be had for only a few bucks. They seem pretty well made and thus I never really gave any thought to buying a new, modern strap. I have them on my Nikon bodies as well as my Rolleicord. Hey, if you're going to be old school by shooting film, might as well go full on, right?

Wow...far out subject! These posts sure bring back memories. Back in early 1970's I wouldn't be caught dead with one, I always believed in using OEM straps. Since then I purchased many old SLR's and a good number of them came with Hippy Straps. Now I love them, they are comfortable and bring back great memories. I feel it gives the camera character. But you won't see me putting one on my D750 any time soon.
