Hi, I was introduced to this site by a friend at the weekend and it's already solved a problem I had with my wife's Box Brownie - not bad going in a few short days!

I'm a landscape photographer (mainly) who got into photography about four years ago when I bought a DSLR (boo, hiss!) The DSLR was a great tool for learning photography but as my skills grew I soon recognised its limitations and moved to a Mamiya 7II which is still my main camera. Like many landscape photographers I've grown to see in Velvia and the world around me has changed as I see new things and new ways of looking at the most prosaic of daily sights. I now write fairly regularly for Amateur Photographer magazine (UK readers may have seen my recent article on shooting landscapes at dawn in winter) and sell images through my website and through a couple of stock agencies.

I've become a bit of a camera addict - it's a slippery slope. I bought a Nikon FM2n as a more portable camera and I love its mechanical simplicity and the results that I get with Ilford XP2 and SFX (is it really coming back?) and it's just great for astrophotography through my TMB 130mm f/7 super apochromatic refractor telescope.

Then I bought a Contax TVS as a carry everywhere camera to use with Fuji Provia 400. And most recently I picked up an ancient Linhof Technika 6x9 on eBay. I've now roped my Dad into making me a lens panel to mount my Schneider Super Angulon 65 5.6 as I can't find any at a reasonable price anywhere - anyone know of a source?

And speaking of my Dad, he's just given me a couple of enlargers and a rather beautiful and very old half plate Gandolfi which is wonderful to look at and hold even if I'm not sure what to do with it! Since I now have an enlarger I'm about to embark on a new voyage of discovery by printing my own B&W enlargements and this forum seems like just the place to learn more about this exciting next step in my photographic learning experience.

I look forward to interacting with you.

Barry

Welcome Barry

Enjoy the forum, it's a good place to be

Phill

PS I'm sure I could find a use for the gandolfi
PPS Your work on the website is excellent

Hello and welcome from slightly more southern England!

Don't worry, a lot of us have had a go with those non-film cameras you mentioned before seeing the error of our ways.

Steve.

Dear Barry,

Quit now, afore 'tis too late! And at all costs avoid the back page of Amateur Photographer! Go back to London, young master! (copyright Round The Horne, c. 1961)

Roger (who has today paid 90 euros for film processing of 15 rolls of 35mm and 6 rolls of 120 in rural France).

Hi Barry,

Welcome to APUG from Hawaii. I'm always glad to see one more landscape/color photographer here - we are in the minority, and need to shore up our numbers a bit. Looking forward to hearing more from you in the future.

Hey Barry, and welcome to a very supportive and helpful group. I spent a year in West Sussex in my youth and still remember fondly the people, the countryside and the beer of southern England (Gale's Ales especially)

Keep shooting.

Whitey

Barry, welcome from Northumberland. Please don't tell too many people about the quiet beauty of up here, we want to keep it that way.

Welcome Barry. You must be one of the few photographers who feature in AP whose life hasn't been transformed for the better by digital. There are so many digi lights on the road to Damascus these days - at least in AP.

Hi Barry,
Haven't been here long myself but seems good to me!
Welcome from another welshman.

John

Barry, have a word with Eddie at www.gandolficameras.com about your half-plate camera. HE will know what to do about it!

And - greetings from Norway

Speaking of which: have you seen what is on the UK ebay LF section Ole?

The very nice Gandolfi Whole-plate camera? Yes, I've seen it

Yup: I though if anyone around here would be tempted, it would be you...

Me tempted?

I've got one... One and a half, actually: A complete 5x7", and a 8x10" in parts (but with 8x10", whole-plate and 5x7" backs).
