Hi all, I'm living in Boston (though moving soon to North Carolina). I've recently transitioned from a digital SLR to a 4x5 view camera and I'm loving it! I'm pondering doing my own B+W darkroom developing, but I have no training or experience in it. I'm looking forward to some ideas!

Hey Paul,

Welcome to the community. There are a lot of us in the Boston area. I hope you can make it to the workshops and show at Belmont Hill - just out past the Alewife station - on the 26 / 27th. You're not too late to join in! Check the regional forums.

hi paul

nice to see you here !

i'm down the street about an hour near providence ...

Street = I-95?

I always notice when I take train an incredibly cool abandoned building on the NY side of Amtrak Providence station. What is that building and who owns it?

Welcome from Oklahoma...you'll love it here

Hey- are any of you Bostonians new to 4x5 interested in a 4x5 enlarger? I have one more than I can make use of. Yours for only a few coins...trades considered.

As a former Somervillain (Slummervillian), welcome.

Dive into the darkroom. Developing your own 4x5 negs is an easy and cheap start. All you need is a light-tight bathroom and four disposable baking tins. Once you develop a few of your own you'll realize it is not difficult, and is much cheaper than paying to have it done.

As for the printing side of things, there was (is?) a co-op in downtown Boston that had great facilities and a few classes. To get the hang of things is very easy. After one class you'll know the basics. Practice and reading is the best way to develop a little further. A good advanced printing class is a great idea after a few months of trying it on your own.

If you're looking to really dive in, look on craiglist.com and go to the Boston page (look to the far right). Go to the "for sale" area (almost dead center) and type in "enlarger." There are currently several enlargers listed from 35mm size to 4x5, some over-priced and some for a song. I'd recommend taking a quick class first to get an idea of what you're looking for.

As for reading up, I found Horenstein's B&W books an excellent primer in basic and slightly advanced techniques, for both the view cameras and the darkroom.

Welcome DrPablo from the other end of the state. 4x5 is a blast and easy to dev and print... and the prints are soooooooo nice.
Hope to see you at the NE-APUG workshop and show at Whitey's school in Belmont.

Welcome to Boston. I'm in Arlington, just a 3 minute drive from the Alewife "T" station (when traffic is lightat 3 am).

Just getting started in the darkroom? You might look into an evening workshop at the New England School of Photography (NESOP.com). Nick Johnson is a great teacher and you'll meet lots of other nice folks. FYI I'm not connceted to the school, but I have enrolled in several evening workshops.

Welcome to Apug. that bldg I believe is the old power station. Very decorative brickwork. don't remember its ownership...but there's been a lot of discussion about what to do with it.

Thank you Drew.
I still have a visa but save for my ex girlfriend all my other friends have left Boston... the ticket is very expensive too, so I don't see visiting the US again any time soon. But I would also like to go back to New York that I love so much...
