As a former Somervillain (Slummervillian), welcome.
Dive into the darkroom. Developing your own 4x5 negs is an easy and cheap start. All you need is a light-tight bathroom and four disposable baking tins. Once you develop a few of your own you'll realize it is not difficult, and is much cheaper than paying to have it done.
As for the printing side of things, there was (is?) a co-op in downtown Boston that had great facilities and a few classes. To get the hang of things is very easy. After one class you'll know the basics. Practice and reading is the best way to develop a little further. A good advanced printing class is a great idea after a few months of trying it on your own.
If you're looking to really dive in, look on craiglist.com and go to the Boston page (look to the far right). Go to the "for sale" area (almost dead center) and type in "enlarger." There are currently several enlargers listed from 35mm size to 4x5, some over-priced and some for a song. I'd recommend taking a quick class first to get an idea of what you're looking for.
As for reading up, I found Horenstein's B&W books an excellent primer in basic and slightly advanced techniques, for both the view cameras and the darkroom.
