Hi all!

I am always on the lookout for interesting new film, and I think I found some film that might be interesting to a few of you!

At the moment I’m still catching up on other film orders, so please expect a 2-3 week lead time if you order within the next 2 weeks. I wanted to put this out here to gauge interest for this film, as the amount of interest might determine whether or not I attempt a big project involving this film during the summer.

This film is NOT ordinary camera film! It is meant for laser imagesetting machines with IR lasers, and is usually used to make plates for printing presses, PCB lithography, and other graphics art applications. As such, it has a unique sensitivity spectrum, and produces very sharp negatives with very high contrast and limited latitude on an ultra-clear, 0.1mm PET base that dries flat.

The film I have now seems to be from a different manufacturer than Agfa (the only remaining manufacturer), but I can get Agfa film new, and it will behave very similarly to what I have now.

When shooting in visible light, I have found it should be exposed at EI 3 to get the best results. Some examples shot without a filter (HC-110 F):

When shooting with a 720nm filter, EI 0.8 produces good results in my testing. Some examples shot with a 720nm filter (HC-110 F):

A red 25 filter may allow for Wood effect at a higher speed, but as of now my red filter has not arrived.

As of now, these are the development times that I have found work best with this film:
  • D-76 (stock): 6 minutes
  • HC-110 F: 9 minutes
  • Rodinol 1+50: 10 minutes
For a developer not listed here, Foma 200 developed normally seems to have similar times, so this may be a good starting point. You can develop this film by inspection under GREEN safelight for short periods of time, being sure that the light is not too close to the film to avoid fogging. It is advised that you test your safelight.

I am very happy to announce that I am (almost) done with school, which gives me a bit more time to work on things for this.

35mm will move forward, and I will be able to make LF as well from the roll I already have. I am still trying to see if 120/220 can be made, however that is proving more challenging.

In case more than is available from one roll is ordered, unless enough is ordered to justify a second roll, the priority will be given to those who have filled out the form first.

You can pay as soon as you fill out the form if you wish, but you do not have to. Payment is due 2 weeks after enough orders are placed to ensure delivery of the film, I will let you know when that happens. If payment is not made by the cut-off, anyone who was not on the original order will be given the opportunity to get their order fulfilled.

This looks pretty fascinating!

Need to try a pota type developer to bring the contrast down. Is H&W Control developer still available or formula available?

I make my own H&W control, I haven’t made a new batch in a while though. The formula I use uses a 2 part concentrate that is shelf stable. If I can find some bottles to put it in I’m happy to sell some, or the formula is also on Photrio somewhere

Photographers Formulary sells a replica of the one Kodak used to sell, can't remember the name,.
But you can Google it; It works great for Tech Pan at ASA 25

At the moment I’m contacting a couple of places to see about getting some of the imagesetter film slit and perfed for 135, as well as possibly getting some 70mm/120/220 slit.

No firm quotes yet, but ballpark price for 35mm will be $8 for a single roll and $75-100 for a bulk roll. Still contemplating whether or not to do 120 since it’s a lot more work.

If anyone is interested definitely let me know!

I would be interested if I had assurance that the film wouldn't get blasted by scanners as it comes into Canada... Pass for now.

Yeah, understandable. Obviously I can’t guarantee anything but I’ve sent a few folks in Canada film now, and they haven’t had any issues with Canada Post (although it can take a long time). UPS is apparently a giant no-no though because of huge fees…

I have some good news! I have gotten a quote from Shanghai about finishing this film in 35mm, and although the initial tooling cost makes it a bit higher than I was hoping, working with them means that I can eventually get text printed on the edge of the film, and possibly even have them pack the cassettes in the future (Astrum can do that too, although the cassettes they use are not good).

I still have a bunch of stuff to work out before I actually start collecting payments and getting film cut (getting shipping quotes and talking with CBP are the 2 biggest), but the good news is that this is probably viable with just one initial roll.

Based off the current quote with a fairly large margin built in for any surprise costs:
136-36: $10
100 ft: $90
(The OP has been edited to reflect this)

It’s not quite as cheap as I was hoping, but if I do any subsequent runs of this film in 35mm, the costs will decrease, possibly by something like 15-20%.
