Help with Ultrafine 125

Hello All,

While I normally work out my own development times, I need a bit of help this time around. I recently shot some Ultrafine 125 in 35mm and need some dev. times for HC110 and/or Rodinal (I use a condenser enlarger). I understand that many believe this film to be rebadged fp4, yet Photo Warehouse lists some very different development times for each film which leads me to believe that perhaps I am not dealing with rebadged fp4. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I can't help you with times, but when you do get it devved, check out the frame #'s and that might tell you who's film it is. Then, if you'd be so kind, let us know; I'm curious.

I cannot profess to know, but I would need more fingers if I were to count the number of times people have stated that ultrafine IS fp4 plus. The different dev times should not concern you, Look at the massive development chart where there are radically different times posted for the same films. I dont think you will go far wrong if you treat it as FP4 plus, ensuring you have a dev time which is curtailed for condenser enlargement. Lets face it, how many 125 speed films are there about: 2? and if it was plus X, surely there would be references to that effect, rather than FP4.

I seriously doubt it's Plus-X. From what I know, Kodak has a policy that it will never re-package a product.

Thanks for quick responses......I agree that it's doubtful it's Plus-X--most especially since Plus-X and fp4 have very different looks (from my experience) and no one has ever claimed that Ultrafine appears to be Plus-X. I'm only initially concerned about dev. times since Photo Warehouse lists 5 min. in HC110B for Ultrafine 125 compared to the typical 9 min. for fp4. I'm all for conducting my own tests, but I'd like a good starting point. Thanks again.

Well, I gave this film my usual fp4 plus treatment: EI 100; 8 min. HC110b at 68 deg.; typical agitation and wash. Results were pleasing. This film does indeed behave much like fp4 plus--very smooth midtones and controlled highlights. Perhaps it is the same emulsion. I'll post some results in my gallery when I manage to find time to scan some wet prints.
