Help with Mamiya RZ II mirror-lock up cable

Use this so infrequently.

Does the shorter end of the release go in the lens barrel and the longer one go underneath to the shutter release button? Is that correct?

When you want to use the mirror lock-up, you use two cable releases. One goes the normal place on the camera body, the other in the lens barrel. When you attach a release to the lens barrel, you will see a part of the place you screw it into prodrude to the point where a red line appears. Then when you press the release attached to the camera body, the mirror flips up. Then you can press the release attached to the lens barrel to trigger the shutter. The release on the lens barrel must be removed before the other release will operate normally to trigger the shutter.

Let me state the question this way. I have the Mamyia "Dual" cable release. One plunger, one release cable is shorter than the other. I think the shorter one goes into the lens and the longer one goes into the camera but I am not sure.

I see in the back of the manual how to do it with separate releases but I wanted to know if anyone who has the actual Mamiya Dual cable release can confirm my assumption.

Sorry, Jeffrey, I misunderstood. I have never seen instructions for this gizmo, nor have I actually seen one. Is it possible that it doesn't matter and you have to push the plunger twice for it to work?

I have one of these but have not used it for a while. The two connections on my release are short (black) and long (chrome). If you press the release without connection to the camera, you will notice that the long (chrome) pin extends first, then the short (black) pin extends. I believe the first to extend should be connected to the camera body (long/chrome), this will flip the mirror, the other (short/black) connects to the lens to fire the shutter.

As a side issue. I find that sometimes when unscrewing the connector from the lens, the sleeve that extends out when connecting the release, does not return. I have had to pull (Push?) the connector whilst unscrewing it for correct removal. I don't know if this is a common problem?

On mine, there is a red ring on one of the release screw ends; there is also a red ring on the lens sockets (not visible until the release is screwed in I seem to recall) to indicate that the two should be connected in that fashion.

Here's the easiest way to remember this.

As the plunger is pushed down, one cable release will be actuated first (the longer one, it has a silver end). This is the one to be attached to the body. The second (in my case, the shorter one with a black tip) must be attached to the lens and this will fire the shutter when pushed further.

There is a technique to this of course. Push until you hear the mirror slap. Wait a second or two and then push to fire the shutter. Sounds slightly complicated but as easy as falling out of bed with a bit of practise.

Mamiya RZ/RB dual cable release

Forgot to mention which one to be removed first.

Mamiya's instructions are clear that the cable on the body (mirror release) should be removed first. No idea why.

If you're using the RB lenses there's a rotary selector on these lenses where the second cables attaches that must be changed from N to M. Pull and turn clockwise. Reverse the procedure for normal operation (I presume that's what the N stands for).
