I'm considering just bringing my Olympus stylus Epic to my vacation, and not bring my Pentax kit.

I'm going to Quebec, if that matters.

The reason is weight, and also because the Stylus is automatic, and has a flash.

I"m worried how the slides will turn out from my Olympus though.

Respond to the poll, and give me your reasons please!

If it weighs less than 15 kilo, bring the best you have.

That's how I ended up carrying a Speed Graphic and a small assortment of barres lenses around italy.

Bring the Pentax. Quebec is beautiful. You will want the SLR and different lenses . If going to Montreal, visit the Gardens and bring a Macro lens. As long as you are bringing all that, toss the Epic into the camera bag and use it for flash pictures.

Thanks Ole, but its kind of heavy while walking, even though I don't mind it on 5 hour bike rides. I'm probably going to bring it, but I will be using the Epic more.

And Ian, it is a labor of love!

Heavy !!! Your young and fit . . . . . . . many of us carry large format equipment and an 35mm camera with lenses.

A decent backpack and you'll hardly notice that Pentax outfit. Going somewhere new also brings plenty of photo opportunities.

If you want to save bulk, leave the spotmeter at home. And when you are walking around, carry the Pentax, 50mm and a wide angle unless you expect to be somewhere where you can't get closer, like a city wall.

DBP, it doesn't really matter about bulk. How about a normal bag with the pentax and a 50mm, water, and biking stuff, and the Olympus around my waist for fast photography?

Gosh, if it's only a Pentax and 3 lenses, plus the meter, you've got nothing to complain about! Bring it all! On my trip to Argentina, I had a 5x7 camera, six lenses, Minolta spotmeter, tripod, a dozen film holders, and a Contax G1 35mm camera and two lenses. And I'm twice your age and twice your girth!

Depends. A lot of the time we, as photographers, fail to live the event, instead being caught-up in the capturing of it. Quebec, while nice, is not a 10 day trip to Ireland or Germany or Japan. If you are going on vacation to relax, unwind, recooperate, then take the Epic and be happy with it. It's a fine camera and takes nice pics. I own one. But if you vacation mainly TO photograph, then take the Pentax kit.

The Pentax is certainly the one you will most likely miss NOT having.

IMHO, when you are talking about 35mm, the way you carry your gear is almost as important as how much you carry.

If you are likely to carry other stuff as well (water, sunscreen, light jacket, a book, sandwiches...) then just make sure that you have a bag that has room for the camera stuff too.

Or to look at it another way, if you have a good camera bag, then you have a good place to put other stuff too.

I have a couple of experiences with long trips involving lots of walking. An Olympus OM1 and three quite small lenses fit well in a small bag, leaving room for film and non-photographic stuff too.

hi marko

if you are worried about the olympus and slide film
why not run a roll of slides through it and see how it does ?

a lot of great stuff can be done with the olympus, but
if you WANT to bring the other camera, no reason not to bring it ..

have fun

Yeah, sometimes you want to be part of the moment, instead of the person documenting the moment.
