I have a nice looking AL here. Looks like a good one with only a stuck shutter to take care of. I'm wanting to get in the front of the lens but cant seem to get started. I've used my spanner to loosen the front ring but it will only come out so far, before it stops. Its acting like something else needs to come off first but I'm missing it. On the front face of the lens there are two small screws but when they come out the face ring they seem to be holding wont move at all. Either something is just stuck or I'm missing something. Is there a trick to these or am I just being stupid this afternoon?

Yes.
Many camera parts/screws are secured with a clear thread locker. It dissolves with Acetone, aka Finger Nail Polish Remover. Coat the threads with acetone where the screws are and let it sit for 5 to 15 minutes then try to remove the screws again.
If you continue to have problems post a picture as there are few pictures available on line and a technician like me that is unfamiliar with the camera is at a loss otherwise.

Here's a shot of the lens in question. I would have thought that the name ring would come right off but as I said, it threads out part way and is then stopped hard by something. I was then thinking the silver ring had to come off first and that I could access it by removing the outer ring. You can see the two holes where I removed screws (they came out easily and didn't feel like they'd been glued). I just don't know the proper order to be sure I'm not fighting myself. If that outer ring needs to come off then I'm thinking maybe the screws were glued in the past and some of that glue could be holding the ring. Maybe a drop of acetone in each screw hole to bleed out and dissolve what might be there?

I believe the Silver ring must be removed to unscrew the name plate ring. The name ring most likely only holds the front lens element in place.
Look closely at the front ribbed ring for small gaps that may have set screws. If there are set screws set the lens to infinity before removing anything.
