Help - Photo image resizing

Could use help, using Photoshop, how can I reduce image size from 6 X 4.5 inches (mb unknown, to 2 mb and still be readable without losing portions of image when posted in for sale? Thanks.

To meet Photrio's uploading limitations, I suggest using your editor to resize the image to 1000 pixels on its longest dimension, then save the result as a jpeg, with quality ~ 80.
Resizing an image for different reasons, such as display of a piece of photographic art, requires more care.

First: forget about inches. If the image is going to end up on a computer display (tv, etc.), what counts is pixels. How many inches that will end up depends on if someone is using a big screen, small screen (phone) etc. so you can't really aim on 'x inches' anyway.

Then use the 'Resample' function in Photoshop and as Matt says, choose something like 1000 pixels for the largest dimension. Keep aspect ratio locked. This will be fine for (most) ads and general purpose sharing/displaying over the web and email.

I don't use Photoshop, however the best option that I've found is BenVista Photo Zoom Pro. It's excellent for optimal resizing of images and works as a Plugin for Photoshop and other Image editing software, or freestanding on its own.

I pretty much agree w/ Ian, Photoshop is a very complicated thing to figure out initially. But once you do, it's very simple. I use only a few of it's features to do what I want. In PS 7, find your image on the far left under FILE and click on BROWSE. To resise it, click on IMAGE, click on IMAGE SIZE, and there you go.

As koraks says, screens don't know about inches, only pixels.

In Photoshop, you can find the [Image Size] dialog under Photoshop's [Image] menu heading. Change the units from Inches to Pixels, if necessary.

If your goal is to reduce the image resolution (pixel dimensions) for the purpose of posting online, then - with the Resample box checked - just enter the pixel dimensions you want. For online viewing the longest edge should probably be something between 1000-1600 pixels. If the Width and Height are locked, enter one value and the other will automatically change to keep the same proportions. This will also reduce the file size (in MB), but I suggest you work with pixels and let the MB take care of themselves. If a greater reduction in file size is needed, lower the JPEG "quality" at the time of export.

Keep in mind that the Resample process results in a lower resolution image, so export the resized image for posting but do not Save the resampled image as a replacement for the original image unless you are certain you will never want to use that image for some other purpose in the future - like printing it. If you "Save As" the resampled image will be saved as a copy, and you will still have the original; but if you "Save" then the downsized version replaces the original.

Thanks to y'all For your help. Have an old Photoshop edition, does not have resizing but, does have Image Size. Can control it that way. Don't use it much anymore now that I've retired. Memory is not that sharp either.

I do most of my re-sizing using FastStone Image Viewer - a by donation image utility that is really quite good for many things.
