DrPablo...

What is the possibility of bathing the baby in one of the bathroom sinks and changing him in his room? With 4 baths and 3 half baths, my God man, you must be able to find a place for that child! ;-) If he keeps getting bathed in the utility room and sees you folks using the fancy-duty ones, he'll grow up with a complex for sure!

Actually, kidding aside, I am just completing Phase One, the first five years of raising my daughter. We bathed her in the bathroom sink, plenty big enough, up until about 6 months, I believe. After that, they have these wonderful bathing lounge chair-type things, that baby can sit in and it is placed in the tub. OK, that takes care of the bathing...

Changing...ahem...are we trying to eliminate odors by not changing him in his room? Diaper Genie, to the rescue! This ingenious device, which looks like a plastic mini trash can holds a refillable cartridge of plastic bags with no ends, so sort of a plastic bag tube. You insert said dirty diaper in the top, twist the top a few times to seal and close the lid. You can fit about 12-15 dirty diapers in there before you have to open it and discard in the trash...the outside trash, that is. While the diapers are piling up in the Genie there is absolutely no smell!

The Nobel and the Pulitzer should be awarded to the inventor.

Voila! Problem solved...and the utility room is yours. If your wife objects to any of the above, I will offer to personally phone her and help her cope with her doubts. I know how new moms can be...and bravo to you for not wanting those chems anywhere near your precious...

Why do you need a drain and running water? Mix your chemicals upstairs and store them in bottles in the basement darkroom. Dump out your spent chemicals to neutralize the acid and alkalis (a good idea anyway) in a bucket and take it to a drain upstairs. Wash you negs and prints upstairs as well (I usually wash mine outside on the patio in a versa-lab and not in the dark room)

Save the expensive plumbing work for after you sell your version of Moon Over Hernandez prints for $40,000 at Christie's :D

...and amen to the Diaper Genie, Gents! A wonderful invention! (You'll be able to field strip and reassemble one with your eyes closed by the time the little tyke gets into training pants! )

We change him in the utility room because it 1) has the biggest sink, 2) has good surfaces to change him on, 3) is next to the garage where we can unload the frequently-filled diaper genie, 4) has good cabinet space for all the stuff we need, 5) has the washer and dryer for our unending torrent of soiled onesies and washcloths, 6) has all the cleaning supplies because he just LOVES to relax his bowels and bladder all over the room the second his diaper has been removed, and 7) it's just down the hall from the master bedroom, and we're keeping him in a cradle in the master bedroom until we don't have to get up to feed him 3 times a night anymore.

If someone wants to stop by and says they can do the plumbing for $300, I'll pay you $600.

If you pay my bus fare I'll do it for free. I think that might be more than $600 though!

In one darkroom I had in a basement I simply bought a $20 garden hose and a $10 "y" hose and attatched it all to the washing machine outlets and snaked the hose into my darkroom. You can even buy a small attatchment for about $3.00 for the end of the hose that has a shut off valve so you can control the flow. Then I emptied the chemicals into a large bucket when done. I made some beautiful prints in that darkroom. If you really want to print, you can print.
