Hello APUGer's

I began lurking around here soon after the site sprang to life. Finally joined last August and subscribed today. So figured it was time to introduce myself.

Hi I'm Mike and I'm an Analogaholic.

{group…"Hi Mike"}

I've dabbled in photography on and off for the last 27 years. I learned the basics and fell in love B&W in high school. Built a darkroom and photographed with an old Yashica A TLR. Guess about 7 years ago the bug bit again real hard, began taking the camera every where. Unfortunately (or fortunately) while taking a picture near a waterfall, one of my dogs knocked the tripod over into the river. The old Yashica was never the same. So off I go shopping for a newer camera. Where I was bitten by my latest addiction, LF cameras. I've used and now have 35mm cameras, but don't find 11X14 enlargements from them sharp enough for my tastes. I've been using a 4X5 for about 4 years now. I love the detail that the can capture and the ability to change the plane of focus allows me to record what I see. Last year a great deal on a Deardorff came my way, so now 8X10. Where does it all stop 11X14, 8X20, 20X24!!!

I photograph mostly old buildings and landscapes. Develop my own film and prints (B&W). Lately I've been trying lith printing and other darkroom alchemy. I'm interested in trying some alt processes in the future I'm a member of a local camera club and run the darkroom there. I teach the basic's of B&W processing to the new members who want to learn. Of interest to APUG, many of the older members of this club are leaning towards digital while a lot of the younger members want to learn darkroom techniques. Some have said they use computers all day long for work; they're looking to do something more tactile to be creative. Go figure, all the doom and gloom about the death of film and younger people turning away from digital. The Rebels!

Hi Mike. Welcome from Hawaii!! You found the right spot; this is a really great place to spend time, and the people are awesome. I now have new friends, from all over the world.

Hi Mike in T.O. Welcome to APUG and know that there are quite a few fellow Canucks here and a good number of us shoot LF too. You won't be lonely here.

Cheers from Ottawa (that other Capital :wink: )

Howdy from out west, Mike.

Welcome, Michael--You seem to be thoroughly addicted. Congratulations!

Hello Mike,

Welcome from Stittsville. Stittsville...you know...one of the fringe communities that Ottawa had to amalgamate so that they could collect more property taxes to pay for better roads, more daycare and public transportation in Ottawa :smile:

I'm new here from last year, and I've found a wealth of folks with great ideas, great talent and great passion too.

Enjoy yourself !!

Hi Mike! You'll find this an interesting place to be and lots of people who shoot all the formats you mentioned including 8x10 (and beyond) too.

Welcome Michael!
Well, let's see...you've been around here long enough to know how useful this place is, so I guess all that's left is to formally welcome you & tell you to keep up the good work converting those young folks to the dark side! :wink:

Hi Mike!

As you know, this is one of the few geat places to discuss obscure problems with fellow LF'ers - and far more entertaining than all the others.

Jeanette, surely you meant "dark slide"?

Welcome from London England. It's always nice to see another Canadian on here. Where abouts in Toronto are you? I lived there 5 years, half in the Beaches, the other half Parkdale. Most of my best friends are still in Toronto. Having been in the UK for the last 7 years that says something about how hard it is to make friends in London, but that's another story.

Have a great time. This is a really good site.

Thank you for the warm welcome

A big thank you to all who have welcomed me to this fine group. I've learned allot from the knowledgeable people on this forum, who freely share their passion. I've also learned many things I might never have even thought to ask from those who come here for advice. For it's been said here and many other places that the only truly dumb question is the one not asked. I hope I can contribute a small portion to the accumulated wealth of knowledge here even if it's just asking the next no-so-dumb question.

Andrew; I live just north of the Beaches, on the wrong side of the tracks near the Danforth.

BWGirl & Ole; I'm doing my best to lead them down the TRUE path. I've corrupted a quote from Clyde Butcher that I keep telling them "Black & White is the only true photography; everything else is just copy work." A few of them are experimenting with cheap MF cameras, Holgas, 6X9 folders and Kodak TLR's from the fifties. One can only hope this leads to big and better things.

Dr. Morten; I trust you will be happy that there is plenty of Rodinal available in our darkroom. They are cutting their teeth on it and HC110. With their prints developed in ansco 130. Am I spoiling them?

To every one else I'd like to meet up with other LF addicts (preferred but not only) to capture the BEAUTIFULL LIGHT.

Michael

Greetings and welcome from accross the pond :D Great to hear your teaching them the true path and with the best available materials .... that HC110 will be good practice for them before they use the sacred Rodinal.

TPPhotog;

Some of them just jumped right in when I told the about Rodinal and developed their first roll in IT.

Welcome from the wilds of Oakville Ontario Mike,
I shoot both black and white and colour and I am a fellow analogolic:smile: with four screw mount Pentaxes, three Nikons ( two F's one Nikkormat) a Leica M3, a Contax IIIa, Kiev III and a Canonet. My brother lives in the Beaches so you must live in Riverdale East.
