Man...you guys are talking cold! I found a photo of what I was talking about:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/greendestiny/2298233

Never forget the time I was up there and people started saying "it's going to be cold" and I thought "yeah, right, what...30 degrees"...and it went down to -20 degrees!

Two things I've learned in life is:
- when you hear on the radio in Michigan "don't drive because of snow" they really mean it
- when they say "it's going to be cold" in Lake Champlain, they really mean it

Was in New Hampshire once and it went down to -40 degrees...said on the radio it was -80 degrees on Mount Hood (with the wind chill factor, of course)

It's funny, because in New York City, it makes the front page if the weather has been colder than 30 degrees for 30 days. Up in Albany guys were telling me it was below zero degrees for 30 days!

The ice is quite beautiful. Its a problem to any shipping in late fall on Great Slave lake or the MacKenzie river as fresh water spray builds ice up pretty fast on ships.

I don't mind our cold most of the time, the freezing rain and ice storms you get back east I do not like at all. Shouldn't drive, can't walk, power outages, de-icing vehicles left out in it, ...

The last time it was "cold" here was December 2013 - January 2014. A couple of months earlier we had the old oil furnace replaced with a state of the art propane one. My wife repeatedly asked the installer if we should have heated blankets for the tanks and he insisted it wouldn't be necessary. During a "cold" stretch of a couple of weeks we had a stretch of temperatures colder than -40, and the propane did gel up. We also had power outages almost three hours long, the city was about to to declare a state of emergency, water pipes were freezing (we all run two pipes to the city water system and have re-circulating pumps going 24/7 during the winter to keep the waterlines from freezing).

Is there a forum or something for "Winter photography"? Here's where vintage analog photography ruled years ago as digital cameras didn't like the cold.

I'm new here too and this site is very large. You might try the geographic interest areas:

In Los Angeles, I missed the winters. In the Catskills I say man, it's cold! But, we have nothing like -40 here...it is cold if it gets to zero degrees.

I've posted to the Alberta forum, but not the other regional ones. Something that related to ice and snow, or winter photography, worldwide that wasn't region specific is something I had in mind. That could include high latitude places (north or south), mountain tops, unusual winter weather in areas that wouldn't normally see that, and so forth.

At the moment, as I've just returned to film photography, I haven't anything yet to post myself. This winter I hope to make more of an effort if the heating and power bills don't cut too deeply into my spending money (for film & processing).

I just posted to the exposure forum about using filters for landscape, so that might be helpful, too. I know exposing for snow is very tricky...something I haven't done too well in the past. So exposure specific questions you might ask there.

My snow shots have had their share of disappointments, with it turning out too blue or grey. Thanks for the link, I looked it up and see that I have a lot to learn from there.

Me too, I have a lot to learn. But, on the other hand I feel too much technical stuff might take away from it. I like good photos, but I've seen photos that are too perfect and I like snapshots too.

My snow photos are always super white with no detail. Or, I underexpose and get blue, like you mentioned. I've never had much luck with snow, Christmas lights, or waterfalls. With waterfalls, a normal exposure looks like glass beads so the trick is to use a longer exposure to make it misty...but then you need a tripod!

Just a quick question, Ron...how the hell does someone end up in Yellowknife...I just looked it up online and it is so remote from the rest of the world! And I thought I was living in the boonies here in the Catskills...

In Los Angeles you do not have to miss winter. You go to winter when you want it and leave when you have had enough. Close by are Arrowhead, Big Bear, Mammoth and Tahoe. If you go to Tahoe I strongly recommend that you avoid any caterers or restaurants run by the people who catered the Donner party.
