Hello everyone,

My name's Anthony, 32, and I'm a British national of Oriental descent living in Switzerland - Zurich, to be precise. I own a pre-dot.com boom Internet services company, and my expertise is in software development and large-scale network design and administration. I aborted my physics studies to start the company at an early age, which means I haven't held down a real job in my life, and intend to keep it that way.

With more computers than I can shake a stick at at work, the last thing I need is a camera that's a computer.

I have been doing 35mm colour snaps for 15 years, and black-and-white photography for 5 years. I have also moved up from 35mm to medium format and 4x5 large format, and have almost completely stopped doing colour, though on occasion I do suddenly get an urge to waste an E6 film or two. I have a kitchen darkroom, though I usually proof my negatives with a scanner and only enlarge the "good" ones. This doesn't happen very often, as I'm not really very good at this photography lark. Perhaps you lot will help me improve, or at least make me feel inadequate and self-conscious about it.

Are the critiques here any good? I committed suicide on photo.net when all I got was trite "nice shot" comments.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Anthony

Welcome. There's more knowledge here than you can shake a stick at but no one will shake a stick at you. Our only hard edges are the print borders.

Welcome Anthony from Hawaii!!! I can feel, and share your frustrations. I too am a software developer, and like you I don't want to turn my passion for photography into an exercise of "data processing". Unlike you, I shoot almost exclusively color (mostly 4x5).

This really isn't a site geared for critiquing images, it is more for discussing processes.

Well hello again, Anthony!

Good to see you're using the same user name - as you can see I didn't quite manage that.

Gruezi!! My Swiss heritage speaking! This is a great place to learn. Your first photo upload (is that Paradeplatz??) looks like a well exposed negative, and a good candidate for split grade printing. We'll have you printing in no time! Welcome to APUG!!

Well, the replies come hard and fast here! Thank you for your welcome.

roteague, I love your gallery. I may be tempted to take up colour again...

Hello, Ole! Is there any place on the Internet where you're not a member?

Suzanne, the photo is of Bellevue; Lake Zurich is behind and to the left of the camera. Have you been here before?

Welcome, Anthony!

I am also a software developer, and I completely understand the need to look at the analog side of the world in the free time. I have learned quite a bit here, started developing my negatives one year ago and started printing two weeks ago :D
I am sure you will also feel at home here very soon!

Stefano

Hello, and welcome from yet another software engineer who hates to spend his spare time taking photos with a computer.

Cheers

Mike

Hi Anthony

You are also here now I know you from the Grossformat german forum as Ole also!
