Hello there!

Just these few lines to introduce myself...

Well, I am French and moved 5 years ago near Philadelphia for job reason. I am 47 and started photography almost 25 years ago.

For several years, I gave a hand to a community art gallery focused mainly on photography. There, I worked on several exhibitions, some from well-known photographers (Duane Michals, Mario Giacomelli, Toni Catany, Irina Ionesco, Arno Rafael Minkkinen) and less famous ones (Danilo Sartoni, Marc le Mene, Gian Marco Agazzi).

I shoot exclusively black & white film in both 35mm and medium format. As I currently am in a temporary location, I stopped making prints as I don't have any convenient location to install the lab. I should find a solution soon... even if I am a poor printer!

My personal tastes are rather classical. Henri Cartier Bresson comes in mind but I also appreciate Raymond Depardon, Werner Bishof or Josef Koudelka among many others... I also enjoy pictures from present photographers like Masao Yamamoto or Hiroshi Watanabe.

The last exhibition I saw was about Weegee. I already knew the pictures but was rather disappointed by the prints rendering; hanging was not optimal (rooms were way too dark) which might be part of the explanation.

The last book I read was a short biography of Evgueni Khaldei with quite a lot of pictures: A marvelous account of the (fortunately) bygone days of USSR.

You certainly noticed that I don't speak so much about gear as I am more interested by who is behind and in front of the camera than the camera itself. In fact, I withdrew from some forums when I noticed that people were driven by self-congratulations and were much more interested by alleged lens resolution than by their pictures. I am not against gear forum but it has to be driven by knowledgeable people who know what they are talking about, not fueling gossip from uninspiring 800*600 pictures...

Talk to you soon!

Welcome, Nico. Gear and chemistry are certainly talked about here, but so are great pictures. Check out the general discussion forums... ethics & philosophy, aesthetics, photographers, etc. Interesting stuff about photographs, and not just gear and technique.

By the way, isn't Philadelphia where Project Basho is? They announce their activities on APUG from time to time.

Thanks all for your warm welcome.

Chazzy, I went to Project Basho internet site yesterday and it seems pretty interesting. I will try to contact them soon.
