I'm about to graduate this May from Southern Illinois University with my degree in photography. While some of my fellow students spend their time in digital, I can't get enough of the experience of making photographs with wet chemistry. My love for analogue began when I learned the zone system and found out how I can chart my film density to gain an intelligent control over my exposure and development. When the time came around that Acutol disappeared, I began mixing my own film developer from powdered chemicals, and at that point I knew that no matter what happens to the film industry, I want to continue making analogue images.

I realize that if I end up becoming a commercial photographer, I may have to invest in digital technology to make a living, but I'll never stop shooting film, even if it's during my own free time.

Welcome from New England. The way I see it, you only need to go digital is when the client demands it... and with me, thats only for proofs.

Welcome and how are things down in Little Egypt?

I believe there is or was a professor there who has written and published on alternative processes? Platinum. Also a fine photographer...

Welcome from Indiana. Hopefully, at least some of your future clients will appreciate the distinct beauty of traditionally made photographs.

All the best,
Daniel

Aaron,

Welcome from NYC.

Glad you finally found us after four years at University!

We will keep you on the "straight and narrow" with "real" photography - even if the d****** dark side makes you use pixels in order to eat every day!

Aaron, welcome from Cincinnati Ohio. APUG is a great place.
Good luck after graduation, wish you all the best.

Welcome aboard from Japan. I lived in Carbondale for a couple of years, before I transfered to another University.

Welcome from New Mexico! I spent a couple years in central Illinois (Champaign-Urbana area) before moving to Albuquerque in '04. Good luck in your soon-to-be career and enjoy your film and chemistry--there's just no substitute.

Welcome, Aaron. I grew up near Springfield, so I know where you are. Keep on having fun with real photography!

Don't think he still teaches at SIU anymore. Dan Overturf, a photography teacher here has been playing with Platinum printing lately though. I believe the person you are thinking of taught him the process, but I'm not entirely sure and the name doesn't come to mind.

Just googled I think it was Gary P. Kolb,

Kolb, Gary P. Photogravure: A Process Handbook. Carbondale and Edwardsville: Southern Illinois University Press, 1986.
