Hello,

I am Rein and I live in Friesland, Holland. I am new to analog photography and you could say I haven't even started yet. My uncle died 10 years ago and he was very into photography and had his own dark room. I got the dark room yesterday and I thought I'd register here for help. I have no idea what to do with the stuff. I think I have two enlargers at home now but I don't know what to do with them. Well read some books and read this forum and I'll find it out. I'm excited to get started.

Hello Rein and a warm welcome to APUG. Check out local colleges that might have photography classes.

Jeff

You have cefrtainly made the first right step. Welcome to APUG.

Hello, and welcome. Now, set your darkroom up and start BUYING FILM!

I am Rein and I live in Friesland, Holland.

Hallo, Rein.

You amaze me! What happened to Fryslân Boppe???
As you know, unless you mean the confiscated territory of West Friesland, Friesland is not in Holland.

Hey Rein,

Maybe you can find somebody in the area knowledgeable about analogue to help you build/work your darkroom. Any Frisian APUG-members out there with time on their hands? Books are fine too of course, that's how I did at least, 15 years ago.

If you need more stuff, look at marktplaats for near-free equipment. Don't waste your precious money on hardware. Rather put that in film and chemistry. BTW, even if you need only small amounts to make yourself a start, it may quickly pay off to buy online. Stores in the West of Holland are 50-150% more expensive than those online, and things won't be any better up North.

In Germany look at Fotoimpex (Berlin) and Maco. They charge about 12 euros for shipping to Holland. The Fotoimpex catalogue is fun and informative to read, if you get the German.

You could also have a look in England at Silverprint and Ag Photographic. Again, even if you don't buy it's informative to see what's around in film, chemistry and hardware.

In Holland there is of course Dead Link Removed from fellow-APUG'er Robert Vonk. Robert is a very helpful guy (he goes as RobertV on this forum).

We are all a bit worried here that dwindling sales of analogue materials will kill our hobby. So if you have any money to burn, spend it all on analogue. And go tell your friends that film and darkrooms are 'super chill', or whatever terms you use in Friesland ;-)

Above all, have fun and don't give up too quickly if something doesn't work out. We're here to help!

Rein - hello and welcome to APUG! :D

Welcome, Rein. There is a lot to learn for a beginner to darkroom work, but you will be hooked the first time you see your own negatives and prints. Have fun.

Hello Rein, and welcome. You've found the best place to learn.

You will discover that we all give different advice, and will defend out methods vehemently at times. But don't worry, everything works.

If I didn't say anything like Holland or the Netherlands I assume the people outside Holland won't know where Friesland is.

But you don't have to say something "like Holland or the Netherlands".
Just say the Netherlands (which is correct) and not Holland (which is not).
Easy!

And it's not even true what you say above.
People in, say, Friesland are outside Holland, and do know very well where Friesland is (with you as an exception?).
:D

P.S.

Just so people outside the Netherlands know what we are talking about:
netherlands.jpg

The red bit is Holland (both provinces of North and South Holland together). The yellow bit is Friesland (obviously not in Holland). The entire thing are the Netherlands.

Hello and welcome to APUGland! The Darkroom Handbook by Michael Langford [Focal Press] is very helpful BTW.

Rein , Welcome to APUG. The best thing is to ask questions about all of your equipment.
Dont pass anything from your collection to anyone.
Do you have a camera ? Have you ever been used film yet ?

umut
