I’m a new subscriber and I’ve been hanging out on the LF board since I joined. I think I should take a few moments to introduce myself. To say that photography has been an interest of mine since birth would be an exaggeration, but, I really don’t remember when cameras didn’t interest me.

I am not a professional just a semi-educated amateur. I have shot 35mm for most of my life (I’m a tad past the half century mark in age) I’ve had periods of being very active shooting mostly nature and landscape, but, for a while I was just the one who had the camera at all occasions to snap pics. It is only recently when I picked up a Zeiss Ikon 6x9 that my interest soared again and I decided to build a darkroom and get to shooting for the shear joy of capturing all the beauty in the world. I am currently waiting for an 8x10 Korona purchased from a fellow APUGer.

Besides the Ikon I have a Nikkormat FT2 bought new many years ago and still performing what I ask it; a Nikon N50 I purchased for a trip to the Grand Canyon. (seems I might have been the only person to buy the N50 which I’m told is a featureless dog) and a Voigtlander R2. I did spend some time in the land of digital with a Nikon Coolpix 990 that I bought for my second trip to the Grand Canyon. It was after this second trip that I saw that digital was not going to satisfy me, I was sorry I didn’t take a film camera. I do keep a little Canon Digital Elph in my pack for grabbing a quick “snapshot” here and there.

Well that’s about it. I plan on shooting more and more landscape with the 8x10. While I live about 20 miles north of NYC and work in the city, those who don’t know the area would be surprised by how much rural and downright wilderness is relatively nearby.

Oh, I might mention that our 21 year old son is in his Senior year as a photo major at Drexel University. He has an eye that is breathtakingly good and I hope he’ll find a niche somewhere between art and commerce (the boy’s gotta eat and, however much I love him find his own place to live a reasonable time after graduation) As Drexel is a coop school he is just finishing a semester as an intern here in the city at Fred Marcus Photography (now owned and run by his son Andy Marcus)

See you around the boards,
-Bob

Welome, Bob. As a fellow denizen of the lower Hudson Valley, I agree about the extent of beautiful landscape 'round these parts ;-). Since you've already spent some time here, you know what an excellent resource it is. I look forward to your participation!

Welcome Bob, hope to see some of your images posted in the galleries.

Welcome from me too, another "semi-educated amateur" going from 35mm through old MF folders to 8x10" (and beyond). I also have a little "digitoy", which I use for those difficult close-ups where the tiny sensor is an advantage and the results are good enough for the web

I'm fortunate enough to have discovered that I live in an "exotic location"; it's easy to overlook the familiar!

Hi Bob,
I am in Rockland County. I shoot small format but there is definitely lots of fodder for for LF in the big natural parks in the area. Also, there tends to be pretty good access by auto which can spare you a few sore backs .

Bob, welcome to the club! I living in Brooklyn and I been hiking to hudson valley and other places close to NYC a lot. I am sure you will find something exciting to shoot with your 8X10. The fall is coming, you might want to feed it with some chromes to see what it can do for you or B&W for the amazing shades in autumn.

Happy shooting and good luck to your son.

Alex

You're the second fellow Rocklander I've "met" here! Me, I'm in Valley Cottage.

A few more of us and we have the makings of a APUG chapter!

I'm just a couple of exits up the thruway in the Suffern area.

Have you been to the Imaging Arts Gallery in Tappan yet? Pretty cool to have a brand new photography gallery in the neighborhood.

Geez, I didn't know of it either. I'll have to check it out. Does it have a website?

Hi Bob,

Welcome to APUG from Toronto. Like you, I'm also waiting delivery of an 8x10. It'll be my first foray into LF. Looking forward to seeing your results!

John,
I'm not surprised that you haven't heard about it. It only opened in June and I stumbled across a small blurb about it on the 'net about a month later. I went to the opening of their second show at the beginning of August. Plenty of digital but, I suppose, that is to be expected these days. Hopefully it will help spark a local interest in Photography. It was very enjoyable with a wide variety of photographers and a nice sculpture garden.

Here's a link to their website: Dead Link Removed I should probably also post it in the "Book, Magazine, Gallery Reviews & Shows" or the "New York Regional" forums just to increase awareness among nearby APUGers. It would be nice to run into some of you folks there.

If you happen to visit in October and crave some Silver Gelatin, I'm going to have several prints hanging at the Tappan Library that month. The Library is _all_ the way at the opposite end of Main Street from the gallery (A couple of dozen steps). Not a very big town .

Bob, Welcome to the site. I've been watching your post from the begining. You have definetly swallowed the hook. I know you will enjoy your time from now on much more. John
