Hello,

Just signed up as I have just bought (but not yet received) a Canon A-1 SLR, bought from eBay.

I am squarely in the digital age now; my main camera being a Nikon D5000, as well as my iPhone 5S and a little Samsung P&S.

I miss the analogue days of my youth though. I started out with a Zenith E, moved to to a Praktika MTL3 and ended up with a Canon AE-1. But the camera I lusted after more than any other was the Canon A-1 but at the time, was way out of my price league until now!

We'll see how I fare with it: got to re-learn a light touch with the shutter finger after years of shooting digital (with 600+ shots on a 16GB card!)

Very excited .... :D

Hi, from a little bit further up country! It's a slippery slope. I rejoined analogue about 4 -5 years ago now, with a single Kiev 4A for £5. When I realised how much really nice kit is out there for not much money, I have become a little bit of a kid in a sweetshop. I think the number of cameras I have acquired is somewhere around 16. My wife is not sure either - she doesn't notice the odd extra one that appears! Olympus, Kodak Retinas, Mamiya, Zeiss have all found their way into my cupboard! Many get regular use - I keep 4 x Olympus OMs on the go with different film in........

I also built a darkroom, which is another excuse for GAS.

Analogue is so much more fun and requires much more involvement than click, click, click => download => fiddle on computer for hours! Enjoy! It's a friendly and knowledgeable crowd here!

Look forward to seeing some pictures in the gallery!

Hope your Canon A-1 does not have the infamous 'Canon Squeak' from dried-up lubricant ----

@Mr Rusty: Ah! Me in a few years then! Once you get the bug back ... My A1 still en route though. And I have just bought a Tokina 35-200mm off eBay as well (I may have mentioned that in my post!)

@(there was a url link here which no longer exists) : thanks for directing me here. As it's been a loooong time since I have had an analogue camera, APUG is going to be invaluable.

Thanks for all the welcomes. I'm sure there'll be plenty of questions.

@Mr Rusty: I've already started looking at accessories, lenses & even some MF cameras - there was a Mamaya that took my fancy! Clearly a slippery slope I'm now on!

Welcome to APUG and welcome back to analog photography from Germany. I hope you find the satisfaction in working with film again, which you are setting out to reclaim. Never ever call yourself a bad photographer though. Nobody is perfect, we are all at different stages with our knowledge and artistic expression, but don't put yourself down.

Thanks for all the welcomes.

Ok, so my Canon A1 arrived. In pretty good condition for its age too - but of dust in the vf but not an issue (I hope - yet to put a film in, still getting to grips with the feel of it!)

Also acquired a Tokina 35-200 mm zoom lens which arrived yesterday; £20 off that well known auction site! I also lost out on a bargain Motor Winder MA because I was too tight to go higher than £15! Plenty on there from £30/40 upwards so did myself out of a real bargain there. Though heaven knows, with the cost of film, why I'd want to shoot at 5 fps!

What would you suggest is an essential (not too pricey) I should consider as it's been a long time since I was shooting analogue as I said?

When I get out & about with it in the next few days, I'll shoot some film anfd put it up on Flickr (or here) eventually - got to remember I need to get film developed - so much for 600+ shots on an SD card!
