Wow, what a great place!

Well after a brief flirt with digital a couple of years ago I'm now shooting mainly film. I studied photography at Uni several years ago but since then my interest in photography has wained, now my return to film is re-awakening my passion for shooting pictures. That and trhe fact that digital has made many film cameras somewhat cheaper, there seems no better time than to try it again.

Not wanting to teach the converted but for me 35mm film gives:

1. Better cameras! I you like using a good camera, you shoot more, maybe its the old plastic v metal thing I dont know.
2. Better shallow depth of field (compared to 4/3rds, APS/C sensors)
3. Smaller, more compact, lightweight, especially the OM system, perfect for street photography, documentary, travel.
4. Look of film, wether its the brand, x processing, high speed film, you choose the film for your needs/style.
5. Costs, everyone raves on about how expensive film and processing is (and it is), but to buy the latest digital cameras is £££, then you need a computer, printer, paper, ink, monitor and printing still costs money if you do it youself or send to a lab...
6. Using a film camera is damn cool...

Hello and a warm welcome to APUG. I agree that film cameras are less expensive now.

Hello and welcome to APUG from western New England! :D

Hello and welcome Edd

Not wanting to teach the converted but for me 35mm film gives:

1. Better cameras! I you like using a good camera, you shoot more, maybe its the old plastic v metal thing I dont know.
2. Better shallow depth of field (compared to 4/3rds, APS/C sensors)

Just you wait until you start playing with the larger formats, then you'll find just how little depth of field can be achieved

P.S. A few of us are planning a get-together on September 4th in London. See (there was a url link here which no longer exists) for details.

Your sins are forgiven. Welcome to APUG.

Hello Edd, welcome to the community from what should be but isn't, "sunny Sussex" !

.
Welcome Home Edd,

I'm glad that you came to your senses.
Many of us were Digitally Deranged for a while.
And it is amazing to have all this geat equipment at ridiculously low Price$ !!!
This week I bought a Minolta X-570, Rokkor X 50mm f/1.4 lens, MD-1 Motor Drive, for $12.00 !!!
Unfortunately it was saturated with Cola, but the MD-1 works great.

Welcome to APUG, Edd. There are plenty of people here using the OM cameras, so you will have lots of company.

Wow, what a warm welcome from so many, like I said, cool place here. Anyone know where I can use darkroom space in north London? I know zoom do in Brixton for £80 a year which seems reasonale if a bit far for me in N8.

Hi Edd, funny I saw someone with a black OM 4 on the tube on Tuesday! (well I think it was an OM 4, I didn't want to stare).

London is a great place for film photography, there is lots of shops selling kit, then there's silverprint, selling the film and chemicals and for inspiration there's the photographer gallery.

For darkrooms I'd recommend Four Corners in Bethnal Green, it's a great set up and friendly.

see you around! Andrew

Really? If he had a bald head and a beard it was me . I'll take a look at Four Corners, thanks.

Talking about four corners, I saw that they are on the list of the open house week-end, coming up this Sept 19-20.
Possibly the best time to reconnoite the place when the lights are on !
