and only 4 more to go to get to 1000 posts it seems.

Hope the equipment installs will go smoothly. Fingers are crossed that you can get production going and the first few products going before folks run out of 400 slide film

Spammity spam spam +1, 3 left.

Looks like travelwides are about to ship, so despite all my predictions it looks like they'll actually beat Ferrania in getting their product to my door.
Still, I'm looking forward to both, I plan to be the first person in the world to shoot a roll of Ferranichrome (is that the name?) in a travelwide with a 617 DaYi back and 150mm lens (I've done the calcs, it should fit and focus to infinity). That'll hold me until I can be the first person to shoot 4x5" Ferranichrome in a travelwide...

It's not stuck any more. Sean worked his database magic and we're good to go again.

Looking forward to receiving my film from Ferrania. Like most say, I'd rather have great quality from a stable Ferrania, than something rushed and flawed just to meet an unrealistic deadline Has anyone heard anything new from the factory or their progress?

Hi Jeff,

There isn't much to report from the factory at this point. Work cannot proceed until the Big Chiller is installed and tested at the end of August. (Dead Link Removed)

We expect to hit the ground running when the team returns in early September.

As soon as they're back we have a proper assessment of the situation and an updated schedule, we'll let everyone know.

Call me when Ferrania start making black & white film and C-41 color film. I stopped taking slides decades ago.

You are aware of the degree of difficulty involved in an undertaking such as this, correct?

I am, and I am sure Ferrania are.

I don't want to buy all my film from a single production run and stockpile in the fridge/freezer. That is not going to help Ferrania either. I'd like to be able to buy my film a couple times a year, and at worst annually.

I dont think he was saying that it would take that long to produce the first batch of film, only that he couldn't wait to keep buying film each year.

But do not overlook that Film Ferrania chose just this way and did not opt for alternative ways, allowing earlier production start.

It has shown that there is a great lack of knowledge on such matters by some within the industry.
I can only hope for the people in Ferrania that they know what they are doing.

Yes, they could have gone down the InovisCoat path, as others have done, and the KS backers would likely have their rewards by now. But at what cost? The loss of long-term control over their coating expenses, control over their coating scheduling, control over coating quality assurance, and possibly most important, control over future short-term flexibility in a rapidly changing market.

Have you been following the other interesting film resurrection project, New55? They are reportedly now trying to bring their receiver sheet coating process back in-house.

Sure, let others do something for you and you don't have to. But you must also then dance to their tune. And live with the results.

Why?

The Ferrania project is a very difficult project, because the buildings were abandoned; the rooms and machines needed cleaning and maintenance (this is a mammoth task in itself), the process requires controlled steam, heating and air conditioning and the machines for it were not operative and were HUGE (another difficult task), so it's not as if they entered a ready-to-use lab and then they just lost time by not knowing what to do...

And now because of the delay (caused by factors that were not fault of them), some supplies have gone past expiration day and need more testing; this takes time as well.

I bet they already have the formulas for the new FerraniaChrome 100 already down on paper and they already know the process by heart; it's just the environmental circumstances. I also agree with Ken that if they were to choose to hire InovisCoat to make the film, it would be like "cheating", since the goal of the project is to have a sustainable Ferrania factory for the decades to come, not just to hire some other factory to make a small batch of film.

And since the knowledge they have to make Scotch chrome is based on the characteristics of the 3M coating lines at the Ferrania Campus, InovisCoat would have to start from scratch to make something similar. One would assume that 3M with it's corporate coating knowledge gained from making Millions of miles of adhesive and recording tape, would have made the Test coater that Film Ferrania is now modifying and the production coater that is being demolished with known characteristics so that a formula for one could easily be transposed to run on the other.

(and yes I know that 3M bought the Ferania plant as it had better corporate knowledge of making photographic film than 3M existing US based Film coating operations.)

An old Russian proverb goes "there is no news in truth and no truth in news" which refers also to Russian news papers Pravda and Isvestia (truth and news).
