I believe that the Ferrania research coater was being used for paper, and this seems logical for R&D uses, since they would need to test paper etc.
I suspect that they would have to clean everything thoroughly after coating paper, thats all, obviously this is not practical for industrial production to have to clean and switch between film and paper on the same coater, but i guess its possible.

I dont expect they will be doing paper any time soon, but that doesnt mean they cant do it in future, right now, they are trying to fill the gaps in the film market, and for paper, thats not a big issue right now.

I guess the current capacity of their coater is not too bad either, ad i believe i read here somewhere that they did infact use this coater for some production films.

Wonderful film! Why wasn't the English-language version preserved? Good thing I know what the German word for "flange" is.

Yes...they were due to get in production in April/may 2015 if I recall correctly.

Of course I'm one of the subscriber of their kickstarter.

Well, this is a pretty major undertaking, so it will take time. We had to wait two years for our 4x5 Travelwide cameras. In the end I got mine and very satisified with it.

It took me quite some effort to translate that video. So be content with that subtitled version.

By the way, that film is not narrated in German.

It is that Dutch version...

I transcribed and translated several industrial films for Apug.
In this case fellow Marco B and me did a translation to look for the best result. I don't remember who of us did the transcription in this case.
Marco B did add the subtitles.

Ok then, to summarize, in coating one can use trough, extrusion, slide and curtain coating heads. At the other end, you have festoon drying, open cabinet and closed cabinet. IDK what Ferrania has or had. I know this, if you have trough or extrusion heads you are limited to one layer at a time and very slow speeds. The Carestream video claims over 5000 ft / min. If you have slide or curtain coating you can coat best at 1000 to 3000 ft / min and can coat up to 20 layers. The Ilford video seems to show a 6 or 8 slide coater that is about 5 to 10" wide.

If you have any sort of open drying arrangement, you cannot mix paper and film due to paper dust. Closed cabinets contain the dust. Even a mix of cabinetry will do you in. It must be all closed.

There is a short summary of types. Previously, I summarized the coating machines in use at Kodak.

I have no idea of Ferrania's plans or capabilities! I can only guesstimate things, and I will not do so here on APUG. That would be unfair to everyone involved.

Your translation is wonderful, many thanks! The film is great--I love all these videos. Sorry I confused Dutch with German. But in my defense I am an American and not required to know any language but English. Actually, I don't even have to know English.

I recall when that tour video was originally posted, there was mention that the coater shown to the tour group was a pilot or research unit as they did not want to waste the materials involved in running the main coater with the lights on.

Yes i imagine they are busy, so no news updates yet.
We all know they have had to address issues with purifying old chemicals etc.
Worst case scenario is that they will have to reproduce some more, but im sure they have lots more things they are trying to get themselves through.

We will get an update soon, im confident of that.
I just know all the barriers they have had to get past, now that most of those are out of the way, they have been working since the LRF has been certified, so all should be good from here on

Kodak had several pilot coaters in the plant, and several in RKL.

We're almost half way through 2016 and we don't know what other hurdles they may have to overcome.
I don't think we'll see film from them until 2017 and that's fine.
