What is this the "dreaded ‘255 white level'" of which he speaks? He would been better off with a Hasselblad as there is no better.

Amazing! The basil is lovely, and that is the BIGGEST tomato I've ever seen!! I'll never worry about overexposing C 41 again. I wonder what the "professional" scanner was, and what software was used....

I didn't watch the video but read the summary. This is no surprise to those of us who have been shooting C41 a long time (and one of the great virtues of Ilford XP2+ as it has similar, perhaps more, latitude in B&W without blocking highlights or increasing grain.)

But I find it telling how little some "photographers" today know about film when a) this is presented as if it's news, and b) the implication is that C41=film. Slide film of course has very narrow latitude more akin in both range and direction to digital, and black and white is in between. You can get away with a lot of overexposure with today's straight line black and white films without actually losing highlight separation but grain will suffer badly (unlike with C41.) And even so that is not true of all films (Pan F+, Foma, for two examples.)

when I'm teaching others I always say that, when i doubt, over-expose. it's a lot easier to print a denser neg than a thin one.

XP2 is simply marvelous, but lately Ive been having great results with tri-x pushed to 1600, although if I'm not sure i over-expose, meaning i'm really shooting it at 800 or even 400, but the negs come out fine anyway, so go figure.

He may have presented this like it was news because it is news to his audience. I like the videos this guy makes, it's cool to see someone talk about old cameras.

Blow out the highlights on a digital sensor and it's game over. But there's always HDR.

I KNOW it's news to his audience. And I'm bemoaning that fact.

How can that be bad? This means that there is a new generation of younger people who are fascinated by film photography but don't know much about it. Not all photographers today were born into the film era, and this kind of arrogant attitude towards those who are less knowledgeable about it does not help keeping film alive.
