He uses stand development. 4-5mL in 400-500mL water over 45 minutes. Agitation every ten to fifteen minutes. Calls it dilution J.

Thanks! I'll have to give it a try, although he's using Pan F so there'll be less grain than HP5 in any event.

I'm reading Ansel Adam's The Negative where he writes about using highly diluted HC110. He points out that there still needs to be enough to do the job meaning the amount of HC110 needed to develop the amount of film must be present. The extra water causes the increased length of time. He wrote of 1:30 using stock solution which translates to 1:123 using concentrate (elsewhere I've seen 1:119 - virtually the same and called dilution G). I'm referencing pages 226-228.

I need help with some conversion math.

I have some Eastman 5222 I shot at 200. I want to develop it in HC-110 1:49, but I can't figure the time. I've found these times:
IE 200 1:31 6min
IE 250 1:63 10min
IE 400 1:50 12min

Any suggestions for IE 200 and 1:49?

Thanks!

The flickr threads I read that talk about dilution 'J' being 1:150 from concentrate & 45 min total time. I've done it 2-3 times the negs seem a little thin, compared to R09 1:100. After discovering a calc error, I had better luck w/ dilution 'H' (1:63) I've already tried 1 hr at dilution 'J' - little improvement. I would either up the concentrate or try 75-80 min.

A good rule of thumb is to use the dilution B (1:31) times + 50 %.

My test results for 5222 Double X in HC-110 1+49:

@200 7 1/2 minutes
@400 11 1/2 minutes (my preferred EI)

Theoretical extensions of these times:

@125 6 minutes
@800 15 minutes
@1600 22 1/2 minutes

I just developed my first roll. Based on the rule-of-thumb that Matt posted, I did @250 for 10 min. That looks not too far off based on your times for @200 and @400, if I'm figuring things correctly. I haven't scanned the negs yet, but from a (very) cursory look they look pretty good.

Another tactic is the clip test described at http://www.covingtoninnovations.com/hc110/ in the section. "How to find Unknown Development Times"

I also want to comment on dilution ratios expressed from concentrate. When the sum of them is equally divisible by 4, the ratio translates directly when using the 1:3 stock solution of HC110. Example: for 1:31 (dilution B) the sum 32 is divisible by 4 with no remainder. The from stock equivalent is 1:7.

1:49 has no easy "from stock" equivalent.
1:50 is very close to 1:51 -- from stock would be 1:12

Hi Folks. Has anyone used HC-110 to develop Fomopan 100 in the 120 size? I bought some Fomopan but have not yet tested it in my Rolleiflex. Any suggestions on a HC-110 dilution and time? I usually photograph architecture, so edge detail is important, grain less important. Another option is Rodinal. I still have some bottles of genuine Agra Rodinal. Thank you.
