A student of mine brought in her dad's 500C today and wanted me to look at it. Everything looks good, but the rear shutter is having a hard time opening when the shutter is released. It does open, but it opens slowly and about 1/4 second after the shutter is released.

It seems that there might be a bind between the upper and lower curtain because there is a wear mark near the center on the upper edge of the lower curtain (make sense?).

I was hoping that a few cycles of the shutter would loosen it up, but it doesn't appear to be working.

I do have a local shop that will do a CLA for a very reasonable price and their turnaround is very quick. I'm thinking at the very lease I would recommend that.

Anything else I ought to be having done? Looking for advice/info. It's a great camera and she can use it next fall for me, but we want to be able to use it now.

A CLA should be enough.

When done properly, it will also disclose any hidden faults.
But these cameras are quite simple, have no hidden depths faults can hide in unnoticed.
