THink I am going to purchase a couple of v800 holders.
Not as flimsy as the v700 and cost about 10 euros each.

I have the v700, but borrowed the holders for v800. Have only done 7 frames (that had marks earlier) and they are fine.

I'm glad I browse APUG and learned about this problem. I've had a similar thing happen when scanning 4x5 film on a V750, where there were dark bars at the flap end of the negative. I always happened with the same holder - both sides - one was worse than the other. I happened several times, and was especially bad when there was sky or gray background at the top (flap end) of the image. I thought the film holder was bad but couldn't understand how a holder could case dark bars - suggesting somehow the film was under exposed. I put the holder aside - it is basically a new Fidelity Elite holder that I bought in a lot before Calumet went under. The real answer is that this holder masks the top of the film enough that the clear area intrudes into the scan frame on the V750. By habit I always put the film in the negative holder with the top (notch) at the right. I rescanned the film with the top to the left - in this orientation the scanner negative holder completely masks the clear area - and the bars disappeared on the scan. Thanks paulbarden.

I have a V700 and this banding occurs for me too in areas of uniform high density (light areas on the positive image). However, if you orient those areas away from the outside of the scanner bed (towards the middle of the holder) the banding won't occur. So if you have an image with a bright sky for instance, then put the side of the negative with sky towards the centre and you'll be fine. If you have a negative shot in portrait orientation with high density on both sides then decide which side is less important and put that towards the outside of the scanner bed.

Don't thank me, thank Zeb Andrews at Blue Moon Camera - he's the one that explained this problem to me! (I also thought it was something my 500C/M was doing)

Or get the holders for v800, they are about 12 euros. Maybe as they are only a set of 3 frames, this occurs, it has happened once out of 10 rolls I have now scanned. So much better.

You can use tape and tape your negatives to the glass platen, and use the bottom part of the scanner instead. You lose a little bit of resolution, because the top portion is better. But you get rid of the banding issue. Now pray you don't get Newton Rings instead (mainly Kodak TMax problem).

I have this exact same issue. I think changing to the better scanning holders could solve the problem, but am yet to try.

I have not read anywhere that this helps, but if you find that it does, please report back here! I think there are many people looking for a solution. I wish I could afford a better scanner, honestly, but at the same time I'm happy that I can't. Forces me to print more, and the V700 is a good print scanner.

I know this is Apug but my enlarger and lens will do 6x6 and they were free with sets of trays to 20x20 inches...

I too find that an enlarger does a much better job than a scanner does. I can print to 20"x24". Any larger than that I have an all optical photo finisher who does that for me.
