Hasselblad left hand bracket for SWC/M

I decided to give the Hasselblad 45020 bracket a try with my SWC. It turns out that the screw that holds onto the base of the camera is in the wrong place. This is strange given that the systems chart shows this bracket working with the SWC. The screw hole on the camera mounting plate is about 1/2 inch further back than the screw on the bracket plate. I can't push the camera any further forward because the bracket plate has a lip that stops the camera moving any more forward. I thought about grinding away the lip but realized that if the camera goes any further forward the position of the handle will prevent removing the dark slide! Am I missing something here? Anyone else try one of the Hasselblad brackets with the SWC?

Your camera has the new style foot, the bracket you have is for the old style foot.

That makes sense. Is there an adapter that will allow the conversion from old to new?

The easiest thing would be to find the correct bracket. Hasselblad had parts to modify old cameras to the new foot. Not sure if anyone made an adapter.

Thanks. The reason I prefer this older style one is that I can use the cable release to actuate the shutter on the SWC. This frees my right hand for a small speedlight that I connect to the SWC wirelessly. I use the cold shoe on the bracket to hold the wireless transmitter connected with a PC cable to the lens.

Just noted that the Hasselblad 46330 Flashgun bracket 2 does have a cable release that partly protrudes from the right side. Can't find a manual or detailed enough pictures to tell if this is a standard cable release or something special for the EL and ELX models....maybe I'll start a new thread caling out to users of those models...

I had a SWC 903, it had a new style foot, I had a Hasselblad left hand bracket, similar to the one you have, made by Hasselblad, with the cable release.

This stuff got extremely confusing because Hasselblad changed the fittings and (in some cases) didn't change the model numbers. The brackets for the electric cameras can be very hard to find, new style foot, with a wired plug shutter release.

The bracket you need is new style with the cable.
At the latest stage Hasselblad worked with Sunpak on a Snapgrip, it seems like it would be the best, but I love the old Swedish flash brackets like you have.

Thanks Mike. Are you referring to the HASSELBLAD 45169 grip? It's quite expensive but if I was sure it worked with the swc I would certainly give it a try.

Could you fabricate one from 3/8 or 1/2" aluminum with edges to match shoe on camera? IE plate to fit w/two holes for tripod screws. One if you only have the single camera.

Sounds like it would work but I'm not skilled in metal work. I'm hoping one of the available flash brackets will work out. I contacted Hasselblad directly today and they appear to be investigating...

I like the Stroboframes, they are what I chose, when I just finished reconfiguring my Blads. These are my Olde Event cameras. Work great left or right handed for carrying.

Yep, for actual flash brackets these are the BEST! I have one in my stash. I mainly use the Hasselblad devices as a grip.

Very expensive, the stroboframes work great but aren't as sexy. Flash coverage for a SWC is tricky.

Thanks. Yes, the Hasselblad snap lock grip is very expensive. The Stroboframes look like great options for mounting a flash. However, I'm looking for a left hand grip with cable release so that I can hold the flash in my right hand (wirelessly connected to SWC) while I hold the SWC viewfinder up to my eye. Some have reported using the SWC with a flash in place of the viewfinder. I don't like to use the camera without viewfinder, and I don't like the look of flash immediately above the lens. I may have to spend the money....

I finally got around to taking some pictures of my current SWC/M flash grip setup. I've found surprisingly little information on left hand grips for the SWC. Possibly because most don't need one. I find it very convenient, and for the way I like to use the camera, indispensable.

I've been using the Vivitar PG-1 left hand flash grip, with the CB-66 base plate. The grip has a rotating cold shoe and a replaceable/removable cable release. Both features are essential for me. I attached pictures of the setup I've been walking around with for about a month (less the neck strap).

This suits my needs well, which are to be able to shoots comfortably during the evening hours with a speed light in my right hand wirelessly triggered. I like to be able to do as I wish with a flash rather than have it fixed near the camera.

While I'm finding this a good solution, there are two issues that I'm not sure I can live with in the long-run. The first regards the distance between the camera and the handle. At its closest (as shown) the camera is about 4 inches from my wrist. I think this handle was primarily designed for larger medium format bodies. This didn't seem an issue until several hours of lifting the camera to my eye repeatedly. There is a twisting force applied to the wrist that really wears me down. The second issue regards the attachment of the camera to the base plate. This is straightforward, except when I need to use a tripod or want to use the camera without the grip it becomes a PITA. Quick releases for camera and tripod could be adapted but would add weight at the very least.

I'll keep this setup for now, but I am eyeing the Hasseblad 45169 grip which appears to be perfect for the camera

Just want to confirm that the Hasselblad 45169 snap lock flash grip is NOT fully compatible with the SWC. The dark slide is not accessible with the camera in the grip. This is problematic not only because changing the film will require removing the camera (easy enough with the quick release plate), but also because it requires removing the shutter cable and possibly the PC cable to the lens.

The Vivitar seems better now! I'll be meeting with a machinist on the weekend to see if a modification can be made to the Vivitar baseplate to move the camera body closer to the left side handle....

Regarding the older style Hasselblad grip.
Is the Hasselblad specific receiver removable( are there screws under the leatherette) so it could be replaced with an arca swiss or stroboframe quick release?

Great question. Yes there are 4 screws and it could be modified (Hasselblad 45020 bracket). I'll be considering this option as well...I attached a picture
