Ok, so maybe I''ve missed something and it's an easy fix. I hope it is.

My 500c is stuck. The shutter won't fire either with back on or back off, the lens will not release. The mirror is down, but not all the way. I tried turning the little screw in the body but to no avail. I can't see anything else - does it need a repair, do you think?

It does. Hassy are, IMHO, too much complicated to mess with, unless you a)Are Willing to risk ruin a good camera or b) Experienced with this kind of camera (Which I think you aren't, otherwise you wouldn't be asking).

I'm not trying to underestimate your skills, just trying you to avoid same mistakes I did. I once ruined a SW Hassy while messing with it. Not a pleasant experience, really

Do yourself a favor, send it to a technician.

Best of luck with your camera.

My 500C/M did this once, but IIRC my mirror was all the way down. But, the shutter wouldn't fire, I couldn't wind on, nor could I remove the lens. I read about the "turning the screw" fix, but had to fiddle with it several times and...finally...some combination of "magic" made it all work, again. It was too long ago so I don't remember exactly what I did. Sorry. Whatever you do, don't reach in and try to move the mirror manually. If fiddling with it a bit more doesn't resolve the issue, I'd send it to a good repair technician.

If you cannot get the screw to work by turning around, it is hard to get it to cock, after several tries, send it to a Hasselblad repairman.

I remember when Shutterbug reviewed the glorious Kiev 88, they had one jam, they smacked against a counter and it started right up. Probably not a good idea with your Hassy.

Standard Russian repair technique. Works fine every time (only on Russian equipment).

That little screw takes a bit of effort to turn. Don't force it, but you do need to turn it reasonably hard and nearly a full revolution before it "engages".

Yes, that describes it.

Check out the Fotodiox website. They have a 'Blad tool that does the job admirably............I think it is listed under the search for "accesories". Best of luck and cheers!

Many years ago shortly after buying a new 500CM while on a trip it jammed on the first roll. I did manage to get it going and it worked until the last day of the trip. Since it was still under warranty, Hasselblad repaired it. When I spoke with the technician before sending it, he told me that there was a part (I think some kind of a cam) had to be replaced and the new ones were made of a different material since there were too many failures with what was originally used. Recently my 503CXi had a problem advancing and with the rear curtain. Hasselblad did the repair which wasn't cheap but it is like new and the turn around time was faster than I expected.

I have a couple of the unjammers which are safer to use than a screwdriver but if that doesn't work for you it's best to have a technician repair it with the proper parts.

True that I am sure, but sometimes I like having an "official" new tool for my cameras!!!
Cheers!
Sam

I have the official tool, just because I can.

that all depends on how hard you slam down the vodka.

speaking of hassies.... i saw a Mash rerun where the 4077 recieves 500,000 tongue depressors. hawkey decides to build a tower as his politica statement. and of course the stars n stripes news gets wind of it, n wants tp do a piece on it.

well the stars n stripes photographer has a very nice hassie around his neck.

Of course but unless it is the Hasselblad 1000 or Hasselblad 1600 it would be historically accurate. A Hasselblad V Series came out in 1957 well after the active part of the Korean War had ceased.

I think some kind of a cam
Possibly the shutter brake. Original one was like a thick, metal washer with the interior made of black rubber that would absorb the shock of the back shutters moving. The rubber would break down and one of the barn doors would get bent on the shaft and not close completely ever after.

I had a rescue body that I messed around with to learn that. Wonderful clockwork mechanisms inside that square shell.
