For those of us who are unfamiliar with Hasselblalds, please explain the mistake shown in the photo.

The Hasselblad allows interchangeable backs and the dark slide is used to protect the film when the back is removed. There are interlocks so that the shutter won't release unless the dark slide is removed and also the back can't be removed unless the dark slide is inserted.
Some people carry multiple backs because they want to have different film types in each back, others might have the same film type in each back, but have one back for low contrast scenes, one for normal, and one for high - this allows the film from each back to be developed according to its contrast. That would not be possible if there were a mix of contrasts on a single roll.
