Did a test film with the 503 I borrowed from Uni and came back blank.. I'm 100% sure the dark slide was out (as I remember putting it back in at the end ) but after taking the film out it was 'reverse wound' on the takeup spool.

Could this have caused the blank film.

If the shutter clicked the darksliide had to be out. It sounds like you loaded the film wrong. The film (black part of the paper) must face OUT when load onto the insert.

That makes sense and thinking about it, it was definatly the other way. Current film I loaded is I'm sure black out though as I double checked the loading before loading it. The film when I reloaded matches it's path both sides whereas before I think I put the film 'upside down'.

If the film was blank, you could have loaded it backwards (paper in front).

While you are at it be sure the film is under the little flange that helps to hold it flat.

Don't you hate it when you do that? All that time to process it with nothing to show, not even to mention the images lost? Sorry. Forget I said that. I don't want to rub it in!

There was a reason I did a test film

Assuming the weather is similar tomorrow I could redo the pictures easy enough but losing them isn't a biggy. New camera - wanted to ensure I understood how it worked before I did anything critical.

I'm now certain I reverse loaded the first film.

I once forgot to wind the film after loading. That resulted in all but the last few shots being blank. I never made that mistake again.
