A Bay 50 yellow-green filter for my 500C is marked on the rim "2x" and "-1". Forgive my ignorance, but do I open up one stop or two? I'm assuming one stop but would appreciate words of wisdom from those more knowledgable than me!

Open one stop(2x). Any color filter will reduce light to the film. No idea what the -1 means in Hasselblad speak though.

FWIW 4X=2 stops. 8X=3......

2X is the shutter speed factor: You change speed by 2x, so from 1/100th to 2/100th = 1/50th.

-1 is the f/stop factor, so the number decreases by 1 step: f/11 changes to f/8.
